An Slua Muiri is the 2nd line reserve of the Irish Navy. The first line Reserve are ex members of the Naval Service who are still of good health and within the age limits for service in the Defence Forces of Ireland i.e.17 years to 60 years of age.

Membership of An Slua Muiri is on a voluntary basis and is open to all young men and women who are not less than 17years of age and not older than 35 years. They must be of good health and have good eyesight, good colour vision and hearing. Those applying for enlistment in An Slua Muiri will undergo a full medical examination to ensure they are up to these medical requirements.

When your application has been accepted (which generally takes six weeks for verification) you will be asked to accept the conditions of enlistment which the Recruiting Officer will hand to you to read before he swears you in as a member of the Irish Naval Reserve.

After enlistment you will join a recruit class and be placed under the charge of a recruit instructor who will either be a Leading Seaman (L/S) or a Petty Officer (P/O). You will also be issued with suitable Naval clothing for your recruit training. Depending on the time of year recruit training will probably take six months. Training takes place on Monday nights. In addition, optional courses are also held over weekends during the Year.

During this six months you will undergo the military aspect of your training. Your primary commitment is the Defence of your Country. Your recruit class will learn to march and respond to military commands and fire the FN Rifle on the military firing ranges. You will also have an introduction to seamanship and will experience some seatime afloat on the vessels used by An Slua Muiri. In Dublin the vessels include a modern motor launch MTL "Niamh" and a 52ft large sail training vessel STY "Creidne" which is equipped with Radar. Echo Sounder, Decca navigation, Global positioning equipment and much more to make your weekends away at sea very interesting and enjoyable.

As a member of An Slua Muiri all transport to places of training outside Dublin will be provided or paid for, and all rations will either be provided on board your training vessel or at the place of training or at the nearest military Barracks.

During a training year you can apply for Annual paid training of 7 days, and for special events and specialised courses this is extended to 14 days paid training.
Your pay would be equivalent to the rate of pay for a recruit in the regular navy and this pay will increase as you attain promotion to a higher rank.
Annual paid training is carried out at one of the following venues.

After you have been enlisted for approximately six weeks and your Recruiting Officer is satisfied that you have the commitment to An Slua Muiri you will be issued with full Naval Uniform.
At the end of your recruit training you will undergo an examination and when successful you will participate in a passing out parade at which your family will be invited to see the results that have been achieved in such a short space of time. This is usually a very proud day for the recruits who will be leaving their recruit class to join the division of their choice.

The division you join is dependent upon your choice and the advice of your instructor who will have a good idea and knowledge of the division you are best suited to.
The Company is divided into 4 divisions.

It must be remembered that no matter what division you opt for it is usual for members of An Slua Muiri to be acquainted with each others task and often carry out duties that is not within their own division.
