Maria
Doyle Kennedy began singing with Hothouse Flowers and recorded
their first single with them ('Love Don't Work This Way' -
Mother Records). Recorded 2 albums with the Black Velvet Band
for Elektra Records - 'When Justice Came' and 'King Of Myself'.
While working on the 2nd album saw a poster in a bar advertising
open auditions for a movie to be made in Ireland. Phoned,
auditioned, got the job. The movie was 'The Commitments' directed
by Alan Parker. 'When King of Myself' - the 2nd BVB album
was finished, a promo tour of the US was set up. A delay in
getting a visa for her newborn son meant the tour could not
happen & effectively killed the album. Back to acting.

Maria sang on Kieran Kennedy's 2 solo albums ('Pagan Irish'
& 'Foxymoron' - Warners) and on an album of Lullabies
- ('The Planet Sleeps' - Sony). Mermaid Records was born.
