Maria Doyle Kennedy

Maria Doyle Kennedy PhotoMaria Doyle Kennedy began singing with Hothouse Flowers and recorded their first single with them ('Love Don't Work This Way' - Mother Records). Recorded 2 albums with the Black Velvet Band for Elektra Records - 'When Justice Came' and 'King Of Myself'. While working on the 2nd album saw a poster in a bar advertising open auditions for a movie to be made in Ireland. Phoned, auditioned, got the job. The movie was 'The Commitments' directed by Alan Parker. 'When King of Myself' - the 2nd BVB album was finished, a promo tour of the US was set up. A delay in getting a visa for her newborn son meant the tour could not happen & effectively killed the album. Back to acting.

After 'The Commitments' there was

FILM DIRECTOR
'The Matchmaker' Marc Joffe
'A Further Gesture' Robert Dornhelm
'Nothing Personal' Thaddeus O' Sullivan
'The General' John Boorman
'Gregory's 2 Girls' Bill Forsythe
'I Could Read The Sky' Nicola Bruce
'Miss Julie' Mike Figgis

Some TV 'Father Ted', 'Queer as Folk', 'The Fitz', 'Thursday the 12th' (due on screen March 2001).

Meanwhile: The BVB parted company with Elektra and kept touring. Maria sang on Kieran Kennedy's 2 solo albums ('Pagan Irish' & 'Foxymoron' - Warners) and on an album of Lullabies - ('The Planet Sleeps' - Sony). Mermaid Records was born.
