Darcy hails Ryder Cup hero McGinley
07/12/04

By Brian Keogh (Irish Sun)

England’s Brian Davis made up for his Ryder Cup disappointment by winning the PGA TOUR Qualifying Tournament in California.

But there was bitter disappointment for Ireland’s Richie Coughlan and Keith Nolan as they finished well down the field.

Davis missed out on a Ryder Cup place by less than €100,000 earlier this season.

But he made amends by hanging on to win the pressure packed Q-School after a sixth round 74 at PGA West Stadium.

Despite a double bogey at the 17th, his 17 under par total was good enough to edge out American Bob Rashell for the top card by a single stroke.

Davis was one of 35 players to earn full cards for next season, but it was a week to forget for Coughlan and Nolan at the desert resort.

Playing at the Nicklaus Tournament Course, Coughlan finished on six over par in 126th place after a 74 with Nolan in 163rd on 28 over after a 73.

The cut-off for PGA TOUR cards came at seven-under par with England’s Greg Owen and Welsh Ryder Cup star Phillip Price also coming through.

Owen finished joint fourth on 12 under, just seven months after undergoing back surgery while Price’s 71 left him in a tie for 13th place.
