Eoin O'Sullivan wins Mullingar Scratch Cup with birdie-birdie finish
5/8/02

By Brian Keogh (Irish Sun)

Dubliner Eoin O'Sullivan birdied the final two holes to win the Friends First Mullingar Scratch Cup yesterday.

The Island player, 27, shot a final round 71 to win by a shot from Scrabo's Andrew McCormick on eight under par.

A Leinster Interprovincial, he was two behind McCormick with two to play but birdied the 17th as McCormick lost his composure and took a double bogey six.

That three-shot swing left McCormick one adrift playing the par five 18th and he couldn't get back in.

After a fine drive, O'Sullivan laid up 60 yards short of the 18th green in two and then fired a sand wedge to just a couple of inches for a cast iron birdie four.

McCormick found the fringe in two but his 60-foot eagle putt to force a play-off raced five feet past.

Johnny Foster, Ken Kearney, Mick McGeady and Colm Moriarty shared third place on five under par with Birr's Justin Kehoe alone in seventh on four under par after final round of 69.
