Baur South Double Chamber

Baur

Baur is an area 8 kilometres directly South of Ballyvaughan, there are two wedge tombs around this area, in Baur South there is a fine example of one of these wedge tombs, but it is unusual in the fact that it has a double chamber, the main chamber is approximately 2 1/2 metres long and the roofstone of this chamber rests on the roofstone of the smaller chamber. This tomb was very difficult to locate as it was hidden amongst the lush vegetation of this particular area and in stark contrast to the only other picture I have seen of this tomb, the image on Anthony Weirs wonderful site. Situated: From Kilfenora take the R476 East to Leamaneh Castle then the R480 North after 7 Kilometres you will pass the Poulnabrone Dolmen take the next left and then about 1/2 kilometre after your next right you will come to a gate into a field the tomb is in the field west north west of the gate about 200 metres into the field.

Baur North Single Chamber

The other example of a burren wedge tomb lies in Baur North about 500 metres North West of Baur South. Although this tomb is on a farm track I initially drove passed the tomb and found it as I walked back down the track. You can see from the two lower images on the left how over grown the tomb is, these images were taken after I had spent 20 minutes removing Ivy from the roofstone and side walls.

Situated: From the gate at Baur South go west and take the next left up a Small farm track the tomb is around 200 metres up this track on your left hand side.
