Selectors Statement for Pride in Diversity 1996
"In making our selections we took into account the broad definition
of the exhibition title, Pride in Diversity. Certainly, on the basis of
the work submitted - diversity was the prevalent theme for the task at
hand. we welcome this as inclusive rather than exclusive, and the exhibition
presents a range of ideas, materials, and directions. We believe this is
a reasonable point of departure for a group show that initiates themes
which are seriously under supported in Irish Art.
We also took into account the ways in which the work was realised, from
concept through production. While the work submitted ranged from figured
drawings, to abstract paintings, to video and installlation, we looked
for rigor in concept and rigor in presentation. This is not simply to stress
professionalism, but is a matter of the level of consideration and application
of the language employed. It was with this in mind that we made our selections
from both the Invited and Open categories of submission.
We regret there was not a greater quantity of open submission work
to view at our selected session. We gratefully acknowledge all those who
submitted. It is our hope that this exhibition will encourage or provoke
future exhibitions, and that through further engagement this particular
selection will be challenged and surpassed."
