Why is the government making all the decisions on Luas? Why can't a Dublin local authority decide what sort of transport system Dublin should have? The Green Party wants a city fit for people to live in. There has to be a commitment to public transport, with a local authority capable of providing the necessary money: which means that people must be able to demand that their tax money be put into public transport ahead of building more roads.
Traffic policy has to put the needs of public transport users, cyclists and pedestrians first. And there has to be more new housing in the City: not in green areas, which we need to keep, but in "brown" areas: derelict sites which could be used for housing, housing in many storeys if necessary so that people donšt have to go out of the city to live. In a more compact city, public transport works because there are lots of people living along the public transport routes.
