'Maintaining the Historic Heart of Dublin'

A European Urban Pilot Project being run by the Trust in partnership with Dublin Corporation under the title Historic Heart of Dublin (HHOD). HHOD operates from the upper floors of 4 Castle Street, the Trust's flag ship property. It has twelve key tasks to run during its three year life time:

Producing an Inventory:

recording the interiors and exteriors of over 2,500 buildings in the inner city.

Exhibition Centre:

celebrating the artists, artisans and craft workers of Dublin in a series of exhibitions at 4 Castle Street

A Conservation Centre for Dublin at 4 Castle Street:

known to generations of Dubliners as Thomas Barnwell's shoe makers and repair shop, it is now registered as a Historic Monument.

New Uses for Old Buildings:

innovative, non-destructive uses, with sustainable economic viability, which will protect our stock of historic buildings.

Community Lighthouse Projects:

advice and financial support for restoration and conservation projects.

Demonstration Projects:

buildings that benefit the whole community and display Dublin's unique charm.

Employment in Heritage:

skills training in the city in co-operation with FAS Jervis Street Training Centre.

Education and Training in Conservation:

courses in surveying and recording the built environment.

Publishing and Disseminating Information:

on all the projects for the general public, our European partners, educational bodies and environmental and community groups.

Working with our European Partners:

exchanging information with twenty-five Article 10 Urban Pilot Projects in other European cities.

Opening the Doors:

developing public access and providing conservation advice to the community on how to use traditional methods and materials.

Innovations in the City:

technology and communications combined with Agenda 21 to generate new ideas in housing, planning and conservation.

Historic Building Advisory Service

The Trust does not receive State subvention for its operating costs. As part of our self financing we operate an advisory service.

Our experience includes the project management of building restoration (under our Revolving Restoration Fund) the production of over 500 historic building inventories, research for publications and consultancy work for a wide variety of clients.
