In this keynote EU R&TD project, ETTS personnel developed the concepts and systems for
integrated transport and payment on multi-application smart cards. The cards were operational
in a 2,000 card scheme for a three month period in Dublin in mid-1994, covering bus, parking,
toll and payphone services.
ETTS has continued to provide technical support to the Irish Car Parks system at Marlborough Street, Dublin. |
||
As a continuation of GAUDI, CONCERT involves eight European cities in transport related smart card payments. ETTS provides the main link between the Irish demonstration, CAROLAN, and the European project and R&TD. Within CAROLAN, ETTS contributes to project management, concepts, system architecture, functional and technical specifications, and verification.
Within CAROLAN Project, ETTS develops the smart card and reader applications for Dublin Corporation, Irish Rail, and Finnegan Transport. These allow payment and access to the transport facilities. Demonstration runs until at least end-1997.
SAMPO is a parallel EU R&TD project, developing demand responsive transport system for rural areas. ETTS has developed the overall telematics system architecture, and the functional and technical specifications for the payment system.
In a two-part activity, ETTS provided functional requirements for smart card systems for a major Irish client. ETTS then carried out a search of all relevant card products and suppliers, analysed the performance and costs, and recommended the technology option to be pursued. Implementation will take place during 1997-8.
ETTS developed the concepts, specifications, organisation framework and business case for a regional integrated payment system, covering financial and non-financial transactions. This took a case study of a medium-sized Irish town, examining in-depth the potential applications, merchant requirements, customer support mechanisms, and financing. The business case at both system level and merchant level demonstrated the economic feasiblity of the investment.
CARD EUROPE is an international forum for exchange of experience and know-how in the smart card world. ETTS hosts the Irish chapter. Among the key activities have been the organisation of the inaugural Smart Cards in Business international conference in 1995, and preparing for follow-up event (SCiB97) in November 1997.
Standards underpin effective smart card operations. ETTS provides the convenor to the Irish smart cards standards working group, has provided experts to CEN TC278 Working Teams, and contributes to the concerted R & TD effort of the EU.
ETTS was an early member of the EU Special Interest Group on Multi-currency Electronic Wallets (SIGMEW) which is preparing to harmonise multi-application devices in a multi-currency environment. This is a very relevant for Europe both with increasing travel for business and personal reasons and with the needs to accept both national currencies and Euros. |
