Belvedere Under 16's play in St. Andrews Football Festival
The Under 16's arrived home from Scotland on Friday evening 25th July with the Under 16 / 17 St. Andrews Cup which they won at the St. Andrews International Football Festival.
The first match was against Ulster Schools on Monday morning in which Belvedere played some skilled football to win 4 - 2 with goals from Scott Weir, Gerry McGovern and two from Michael Mooney.
On Monday evening Belvedere played local under 17 team, Dundee West. This was a tough physical match in which Belvedere created plenty of goal scoring chances. But a combination of poor finishing by the Belvedere attack and some solid Dundee defending kept the score at 1 - 1, with Kieran Phelan scoring.
On Tuesday evening Belvedere played Dunfermline F.C. in a very entertaining game which produced some flowing football from both teams. Belvedere proved to be more than a match for the full time academy team and ran out worthy 2 - 0 winners with goals from Michael Mooney.
The squad then travelled to Glasgow on Thursday to play a friendly match with Rangers. The match was played at Rangers F.C.'s fabulous new training facility, Murray Park. Three periods of thirty minutes each were played during which both teams produced some excellent football. Belvedere, despite a slow start, soon settled down and combined well to create quite a number of goal scoring chances, including hitting the wood work. The game ended in a 2 - 2 draw with goals from Michael Mooney and Shane Fitzgerald.
Belvedere were due to play Celtic on Friday afternoon but the game was cancelled at late notice much to everyones disappointment. Instead, Tommy Burns, Celtic's head of youth development personally organised a coaching session for the Belvedere team at the Celtic training ground. This was followed by a visit to Celtic Park, which Tommy arranged for Belvedere, even though the stadium was officially closed to visitors, due to building work.
