HIGHLIGHTS SEASON 2002/2003:

 HIGHLIGHTS FOR BELVEDERE FOOTBALL CLUB FOR SEASON 2002/2003.

 

July 2002:

Irish Under 15 team take part in the under 16 section of the Foyle Cup and finish runners-up winning five games out of six. SEAN FAY plays.

 

Irish Under 18 team play in International section of Milk Cup. They lose 0-1 to Denmark and 0-2 to Scotland. In the final game they draw 3-3 with Northern Ireland. Six Belvedere players play. Current players KIERAN SHARKEY, TIM CLANCY, MARK O’BRIEN and STEPHEN MAGUIRE and former players MORGAN CRANLEY (Shelbourne) and BARRY COGAN (Millwall).

 

Irish Under 19 team participate in UEFA Under 19 European Finals in Norway. They beat Belgium 2-1 and England 3-2 but lose to Group winners Germany 0-3. Three former Belvedere players play in all three games. STEPHEN CAPPER (Sunderland), STEPHEN KELLY (Spurs) and STEPHEN ELLIOTT (Manchester City). They qualified for the third place play-off against Slovakia which they lost 1-2. All three former Belvedere players play against Slovakia. Irish qualify for FIFA World Finals as a result.

 

The following former Belvedere players have joined English Clubs this month:

 

Mark Sheridan (Huddersfield Town), Gerard Nash (Ipswich Town),

Niall Flynn (Sunderland), Philip Reilly (Manchester City),

Terry Masterson (Millwall), Kevin Grogan (Millwall), Tim Clancy (Millwall)

 

AUGUST 2002

 

WESLEY HOOLAHAN (now Shelbourne) has an excellent game in his first appearance for Irish Under 21 team who had a 1-0 friendly win away to Finland.

 

THOMAS BUTLER (Sunderland) gains his first Full Cap for Ireland in the 3-0 away win against Finland.

 

Irish Under 18’s draw 3-3 with Norway, and lose 0-1 to the Czech Republic and 1-2 to Hungary in friendly four Nation Tournament in the Czech Republic. ANDY COUSINS (Leeds Utd), EDDIE KEYES (Leeds Utd), MARK QUIGLEY (Millwall) and DEREK TYRRELL (Leeds Utd) play in all three games.

 

SEPTEMBER 2002:

 

Irish Under 19 team are defeated 1-3 by Denmark in friendly away game in Copenhagen. Belvedere players involved in the game were KIERAN SHARKEY, TIM CLANCY (Millwall), BARRY COGAN (Millwall), RICHIE RYAN (Sunderland), STEPHEN ELLIOTT (Manchester City), MARK O’BRIEN and KARL BERMINGHAM (Manchester City).

 

Ireland’s Under 19’s defeat Denmark 2-1 in second game of tour. Former Belvedere players STEPHEN ELLIOTT and RICHIE RYAN score the goals. Other Belvedere players to feature were TIM CLANCY, KIERAN SHARKEY and KARL BERMINGHAM.

 

THOMAS BUTLER (Sunderland) and WESLEY HOOLAHAN (Shelbourne)) play in the Irish Under 21 team defeated 0-2 by Russia in the European U.21 Championship game held in Moscow.

 

Ireland’s Under 16’s lose 1-2 to Wales in Dublin. MARK HEALY plays.

 

The Irish Under 17’s play in eight Nation Tournament in Italy. They defeat Czech Republic 2-0, Italy 2-1 but lose 0-3 to Uruguay. STUART HYLAND, NIALL FLYNN (Sunderland) and DARREN O’BRIEN all play in two games each.

 

OCTOBER 2002:

Irish Under 16’s defeat Northern Ireland 1-0 in Dublin. MARK HEALY plays.

Ireland under 19’s lose 2-3 to Hungary in friendly International in Budapest. KIERAN SHARKEY, STEPHEN ELLIOTT (Man.City) and MARK QUIGLEY (Millwall) play. Second game against Hungary results in 1-1 draw, STEPHEN ELLIOTT and MARK QUIGLEY play in this game.

 

Irish Under 21 team lose 2-3 to Switzerland, in Kilkenny, in European Championship game. WESLEY HOOLAHAN (Shelbourne) and THOMAS BUTLER (Sunderland) both play.

 

Full Irish International team lose 1-2 to Switzerland in European Championship Qualifying game in Dublin. THOMAS BUTLER (Sunderland) makes his competitive debut and gains his second full cap.

 

Irish Under 17 team fail to qualify from European Under 17 Championship mini-group held in Cork. They lose 0-3 to Germany, 0-1 to France and draw 1-1 with Slovenia. GERARD NASH (Ipswich Town), NIALL FLYNN (Sunderland) and DARREN O’BRIEN play in two of the games while MARK SHERIDAN (Huddersfield Tn) plays in one.

 

 

NOV. 2002:

Irelands Under 20’s lose 1-2 to Slovakia in away friendly. STEPHEN KELLY (Spurs), STEPHEN CAPPER (Sunderland) and DARYL MCMAHON (West Ham) all play.

 

Second game of Irish Under 20’s East European Tour ends in 1-6 defeat by Czech Republic. STEPHEN KELLY, DARYL MCMAHON and GEORGE SNEE (Spurs) play.

 

WESLEY HOOLAHAN (Shelbourne) is on the bench for the Full Irish International side in the friendly 0-0 draw away to Greece. Unfortunately he does not make an appearance.

 

 

DEC. 2002:

Dublin Under 15 Representative team travel to Belfast to play Belfast Schools. They lose 0-2. MARK HEALY, SHANE FITZGERALD and CONOR STAUNTON play.

 

 

 

JANUARY 2003:

Former player STEPHEN KENNY , Manager of Bohemians, guides his team to the National League Premier Division title.

 

Irish Under 20 team win four Nation invitational Tournament in United Arab Emerites. Despite losing 1-2 to South Korea in their first game they went on to defeat UAE 3-2 and France 1-0 to win the competition. STEPHEN KELLY, STEPHEN CAPPER and STEPHEN ELLIOTT play in all three games.

 

Former long standing Belvedere manager and coach, NOEL O’REILLY, is appointed assistant to Brian Kerr with the Full Irish International team.

 

FEBRUARY 2003:

WESLEY HOOLAHAN wins the Eircom League Young Player of the Year award at the Professional Footballers Association annual dinner.

 

WESLEY HOOLAHAN, THOMAS BUTLER and RICHIE BYRNE (Shamrock Rovers) play in the Irish Under 21 team defeat by Scotland in Under 21 International held in Kilmarnock.

 

Irish Under 19’s play Slovakia in two games in Dublin. They draw 1-1 but lose 0-2. TIM CLANCY and MARK QUIGLEY, both of Millwall, play.

 

The Irish Under 15 team play their first Internationals in two away games against Wales. KEITH TREACY plays in both games.

 

Various Dublin and District League Representative teams play in National Inter-league competitions. STEPHEN HENDERSON plays for the Under 14’s, SCOTT WEIR and SHANE FITZGERALD play for Under 15’s while JAMES HAND, KEITH KELCH, STEPHEN BYRNE, MARK CORRIGAN and MARK DUGGAN play for the Under 16’s.

 

MARCH 2003:

Irish Under 17 International team take part in four Nation Tournament in the Algarve in Portugal. Ireland beat Russia in first game 3-0. Belvedere players involved in this game were TERRY MASTERSON (now Millwall), GERARD NASH (now Ipswich Town), DARREN O’BRIEN and NIALL FLYNN (now Sunderland). In the second match Ireland win 3-1 against Norway. Belvedere players to feature were Terry, Darren and Niall together with ALAN SHEAHAN who gained his first cap at any level. In the third game of Tournament Ireland lose 1-2 to Portugal, who win the competition. Terry, Gerard, Alan and Darren all play.

 

Dublin and District League Under 12 Representative team defeat Midlands League 6-2 in National Interleague competition. DANIEL LANGAN, ROBERT DORAN and KEITH MURRAY play.

 

Irish Under 19’s play in four nation Opporto Tournament in Portugal. They lose to Belgium 1-2, draw with Norway 1-1 and lose to Portugal 0-1. TIM CLANCY plays against Norway and Portugal.

 

SHANE FITZGERALD and MARK KEANE gain their first caps in Ireland Under 16’s 0-3 defeat by Austria in St.Polten.

 

Dublin and District League's under 13 and under 14 Representative teams play North Wales in two games. Both games won 2-1. PAUL CAHALANE plays for under 13.s while STEPHEN HENDERSON plays for the under 14's.

 

APRIL 2003:

Irish under 15 team win 2-1 against Holland in Uithoorn. KEITH TREACY plays full game.

 

Irish under 15 ‘A’ Team defeat Finland 2-1 in Dublin. KEITH TREACY plays.

 

Irish Under 15 ‘B’ Team lose 2-3 to Finland in Dublin. STEPHEN HENDERSON plays.

 

 

Irish Under 16 team compete in eight Nation Montaigu (France) Tournament they lose to Portugal 0-1, they defeat Japan 1-0 and Russia 3-2 and draw with Italy 1-1. Italy win the Tournament. SHANE FITZGERALD plays in three of the games while MARK KEANE plays in two.

 

RICHIE RYAN makes his first team debut for Sunderland in the North East Derby game against Newcastle Utd.

 

MAY 2003:

 

Irish Under 16 team play in eight Nation Ballymena Tournament. They lose 0-1 to Czech Republic and draw with Israel 1-1, England 1-1 and Switzerland 2-2. MARK KEANE plays in three games, SCOTT WEIR in two and SHANE FITZGERALD in one.

 

UEFA Under 19 mini-group is held in Dublin involving Ireland, England, Slovenia and Switzerland. Ireland lose first game 0-1 to England but win the other two games, 3-2 against Switzerland and 2-0 against Slovenia. STEPHEN ELLIOTT and RICHIE RYAN play in all three games, MARK QUIGLEY plays against England and Slovenia while TIM CLANCY plays against Slovenia. England qualify from Group.

 

KEITH TREACY plays and scores only goal as Ireland U.15 ‘A’ squad defeat Northern Ireland 1-0 in Belfast.

 

STEPHEN HENDERSON keeps goal for Ireland in U.15 ‘B’ squads 1-0 victory over Northern Ireland also in Belfast.

 

JUNE 2003:

 

Irish Under 21 team draw 2-2 with Germany in friendly International in Cork. THOMAS BUTLER, STEPHEN KELLY, STEPHEN CAPPER, STEPHEN ELLIOTT and WESLEY HOOLAHAN all play.

 

 Irish Under 21 team defeat Albania 2-1 in UEFA Championship game in Dublin. THOMAS BUTLER, STEPHEN KELLY, STEPHEN CAPPER and STEPHEN ELLIOTT all play.

 

 

Irish Under 21 team play Georgia in UEFA Championships in Kilkenny. Game ends in 1-1 draw. Five former Belvedere players play in game. They were STEPHEN KELLY, STEPHEN CAPPER, THOMAS BUTLER, STEPHEN ELLIOTT and WESLEY HOOLAHAN.
