BELVO DOUBLE ACT

Meet David Connolly and Gary Breen Mark 11

By Noel Butler, Evening Herald Schoolboy Striker, 13th October 2003

Name two players with the same name who have played for Ireland ? Stuck for an answer? Well, Belvedere Football Club might well be able to provide two answers to that football quiz question in the not too distant future.

While Gary Breen and David Connolly were doing their stuff for Brian Kerr in Basel on Saturday, their namesakes were busy chasing their dream of wearing the green in a DDSL U-14 Premier Division clash with St. Kevin's Boys.

And, while they still have a long way to go, Navan striker David and Kilkenny-born defender Gary are certainly on the right road.

Both are in the shake-up to make the Irish U-15 development squad and they furthered their claims with accomplished performances on Saturday.

David hit a hat-trick, while Gary gave yet another peerless performance in central defence as Belvedere hammered the Saints 7 - 0.

Gary, who is also a top class athlete, has already been on trial with Wolves and is due to spend the forthcoming mid-term break with Millwall.

David has yet to visit any cross Channel club, but the posse of scouts who saw him bang in those goals on Saturday will surely have gone away to write up a glowing report.

Certainly if David Connolly Mark Two and Gary Breen Mark Two continue to work hard under Belvedere coaches Damien Byrne and Gerry Fitzgerald you'll hear a lot more about them.
