Research, Teaching and Publications
In much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow
Ecclesiastes 1:18
The department views research as a central component of its role and has had the highest number of Geriatric Medicine/Gerontology presentations at the Irish National Scientific Meetings. The research interests and publications of the department relate to: the older driver, dementia, dysphagia, stroke, the study of interdisciplinary working practices, nosocomial diarrhoea.
The department is one of the two sites of the Department of Medical Gerontology, one of the 21 Units of the School of Medicine of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Trinity College Dublin. Prof O'Neill is an associate professor in Medical Gerontology, Dr Collins is the Director of the Stroke Service, Dr O'Driscoll of the Falls Service and the Unit is actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate interdisciplinary education. A structured undergraduate course in geriatric medicine for junior medical students has been taking place since since 1995, and the lecture notes are available on this site. Most recently, Prof O'Neill has chaired the Irish Government's Working Group on Elder Abuse, which produced its report, Protecting Our Future, in Sept 2002. The Unit is also a base for the TCD Diploma in Gerontological Nursing.
The unit is a collaborator in a major Health Research Board project on ageing and health, the Healthy Ageing Research Project (HARP). This is lead by RCSI and also involves Queen's University Belfast and the Economic and Social Research Institute. It has developed the first iteration of a longitudinal study on ageing of older Irish people.
Professor O'Neill is a Principal Investigator for the National Stroke Audit, along with Prof H McGee of RCSI.
We are also part of the new PhD networks funded by the Health Research Board in May 2004 to the Institute of Neurosciences and are a partner in the Neurosciences and Ageing group on the Tallaght campus. The hospital has chosen Neurosciences and Ageing as one of the four main research topics of its official research strategy. This will form a key part of the Institute of Preventive Medicine and Advanced Care planned for the next phase of research development on site.
The unit is also one of the founder members and coordinators of the European Masters in Gerontology: a module was held on the Tallaght site in the summer of 2004.
