The very first Duty Free shop in the world was opened at Shannon Airport, Co. Clare, Ireland in 1947.

In June 1997 Aer Riannta, Shannon celebrated the 50th anniversary of Duty Free with a Gala Dinner / Entertainment in the departure lounge of Shannon Airport itself.
