Match Reports 2004/05

Going into the game, Belvedere were quietly confident, but not overly so, as they knew they were up against a good side from the rebel county, whose club were in their first ever National Cup Final. Corinthians Boys F.C. came to Dublin hoping to upset the form books and overturn reigning All - Ireland champions, Belvedere F.C.

Preparation for the clash was good with both sides doing their homework on each other prior to the event.

In the Belvedere camp, nerves were at a premium in the couple of hours leading up to kick-off, as players were anxious to get onto the pitch and perform in front of their family and supporters. It was a difficult task for manager Damien Byrne to pick the eleven to start the game, as the whole squad had served him well throughout the campaign. Nevertheless all players were made feel part of the occasion, and the great team spirit that is very evident in this bunch of boys, shone through.

The game finally begun and it was evident from the start that the Cork outfit meant business, as they fought hard to gain the upper hand. Belvedere stood up to the challenge and it was they who carved out the first real chance, with Karl Byrne shooting narrowly wide from the edge of the box, with five minutes on the clock. Eight minutes later, Gary Breen saw his shot saved by Power in the Cork goal.

At this stage, with the game settling down a bit, Belvedere started to knit a few passes together and began to take control. In the 27th. minute, a neat move down the left hand side involving Felim McMahon, Gary O'Toole and Paul Cahillane resulted in the opening goal. Karl Byrne lost his marker as he arrived at the far post to steer Cahillane's cross into the net, past the hapless 'keeper Power. Relief all around, as Belvedere made the breakthrough they deserved !.

Aiden McCluskey was called into action within five minutes of the opening goal, as a speculative chip, which was heading to the top corner of the net, was dealt with superbly. Corinthians huffed and puffed for the remainder of the half, as they tried to break down the Belvo rearguard, but couldn't find a way through.

With the second half underway, Corinthians knew they had to score early if the were to force their way back into a game that was slipping away from them. Belvedere were made aware at half-time to be on their guard for such an event and they dealt with it superbly. With David Connolly and Cillian Sheridan working tirelessly up front, along with Ian Dunne and O'Toole in midfield, the Cork side found it difficult to get any real move going.

When Corinthians did manage to get close to the Belvedere goal area, they were dealt with efficiently by a well organised defence consisting of McMahon, Breen, Brendan Moloney and Mitchell Casey.

With 63 minutes on the clock, a wonderful move involving Moloney and Byrne, produced the second goal of the afternoon. The two players raided down the right wing, with Byrne laying the ball into the path of Connolly. With his lightening pace, Connolly left his marker in his wake before unleashing an un-stopable daisy-cutter into the back of the goal. Ecstatic celebrations followed, as Belvedere went two-up.

Moments later, Connolly went close again as he attempted to "dink" the ball over the advancing 'keeper, who read the situation and dealt with it well. Brian Lonergan replaced Connolly, who had worked so hard all afternoon.  Lonergan went to the right wing with Byrne going up-front. 

Dunne and O'Toole were still beavering away in midfield and it was mainly through their endeavours that Corinthians were unable to manufacture any real form of attack. However, the Cork side did still manage one more attack, but it was dealt with by McCluskey who had a comfortable day in goal. Corinthians still felt they had a chance if they could just penetrate the excellent Belvedere defence and get on the score-sheet, but it wasn't to be.

Robert Lawless replaced Breen and Keith Cox went on for Sheridan, with ten minutes left to play.  With six minutes left on the clock, Moloney was again involved with a raid down the right hand side. He passed to Cahillane, who was fouled. The  free kick resulted in Belvedere scoring their third goal and with that, putting the game beyond the reach of Corinthians. The ball was played to Lonergan, who then found Byrne on the edge of the box. He cleverly "nutsied" the defender before firing the ball into the top corner of the net. Again we witnessed great celebrations as the players knew then, that they would be crowned All-Ireland Champions for the second year in succession.

Unfortunately with the rules of only three subs being allowed, Brian Bonny, Colin Pugh and James Cumberton couldn't get on the pitch. However they were equally happy to be part of such a great squad of players.

Karl Byrne received the "Man of the Match" award. He was run close by a very competent display by Felim McMahon. Paul Cahillane, having missed out on last year's final, was overjoyed to receive the Evans Cup, as the captain of Belvedere F.C.

Belvedere Under 17's became the first team to win both the FAI Youths Cup and the FAI Under 17 Cup in the same season, amid emotional scenes, before a huge crowd in Whitehall, on Friday night 27th May 2005.

Having completed the first leg of their "Mission Impossible" by overcoming Sligo Rovers 4-1 in the Youths Cup decider last Sunday, Belvo claimed another page in the Irish football record books by winning 2 - 1 over St Kevin's Boys, to claim the Under 17 trophy.

Little wonder then, that a huge roar echoed around the ground when Mark Healy lifted the FAI Under 17 trophy, before the squad joyously celebrated, as they posed for photographs with both pieces of magnificent silverware.

Afterwards, Belvedere Chief Executive Philip Manly, rightly pointed out to the players and management that they had earned a special place in the club's annals.

 Sporting an eye-catching new white strip, kindly sponsored by O'Neill's, Belvedere began the game very brightly and went ahead inside on minutes, when Mark Keane unleashed an unstoppable shot from all of 25 yards, to bring his tally for the season to 27.

Saint Kevin's responded well to that early set-back and were back on level terms on the quarter-hour mark. The Belvo defence was slow to react as their opponents worked a short corner, and then compounded that error by failing to close the ball down at the edge of the box, allowing Gareth Whelan time to pick his spot past a helpless Belvo 'keeper Shane Roche.

That goal rocked Belvo, who also suffered a further setback when midfielder James O'Sullivan limped out of the action with a foot injury. He was replaced by Conor Lenihan, who was to play a key role in the winning goal.

Although now struggling to play with their normal fluency, Belvedere always looked the more likely to score, as Keane and Shane Fitzgerald both went close before the interval.

Saint Kevin's Boys were reduced to ten men when Stephen Gormley was red-carded for a second bookable offence, and this prompted Belvo to up the tempo. Sean Fay then went close on  65 minutes, while Conor Powell let fly with a rocket from 30 yards, which also flew inches wide.

The all-important winner came in the 73rd minute. Powell released Lenihan, who then made a great run down the left wing, before delivering an inch-perfect cross with his weaker right foot. Purcell did the rest, brilliantly heading the ball home.

Timmy Purcell deservedly received the "Man of the Match" award in recognition of a great display, which was laced with both skill and hard work. But it was really a great team effort, from a very special group of players.

Belvedere under 17's won the first of their two FAI cup finals this week, when they comfortably overcame Sligo Rovers at Richmond Park on Sunday. Despite facing opposition a year their senior, the Fairview club put on a polished display of football, capped with some fine goals, to take home the silverware.

Belvo were the dominant side throughout and settled into their stride early on, taking the game to Sligo from the kick off. They enjoyed a lot of possession and moved the ball around quickly. This caused Sligo plenty of problems and led to a number of corner kicks. Belvo's midfield trio of Mark Healy, Conor Powell and James O'Sullivan controlled the centre of the park. This allowed Belvo to get the ball into the feet of front three players Shane Fitzgerald, Timmy Purcell and Mark Keane who were linking up well and stretching the Sligo defence. Keane was causing real trouble for Sligo, dropping deep and bringing others into the game. One such move set "Fitzie" free down the right, only for the defender to force a corner. From the corner kick, the ball broke to O'Sullivan in space on the edge of the area, but he shot over. A goal looked on the cards for Belvo, and it duly arrived after 25 minutes, courtesy of Keane who pounced on a loose ball, following an excellent corner kick from Fitzgerald. However, despite creating further chances on goal, Belvo were unable to increase their lead before the half time whistle.

Belvo began the 2nd half as they finished the first, and the second goal duly arrived 10 minutes after the restart when O'Sullivan picked up a loose ball in mid-field and drove forward. He played the ball to Purcell who back-heeled into the path of Sully, who coolly dispatched his effort past the keeper, for a great goal. At this stage, Sligo were desperately trying to get back into the game, but they couldn't find a way past the Belvo back four of Sean Fay James Lee, Michael Mooney and Niall O'Reilly, while Shane Roche in goal always lookedcomfortable. In fact, it was Belvo who continued to create chances and grabbed the killer 3rd goal, through man of the match Mark Keane, who's swerving right foot shot from the edge of the box, flew into the top corner of the net, to cap a fine performance. Conor Lenihan then replaced captain Mark Healy, who was on a yellow card, and was withdrawn as a precaution for Friday's Under 17 final, while Rory Brown and Derek Swan came on for O'Sullivan and Purcell. Sligo did manage to score a consolation goal, with a good header from an in-swinging corner kick, to make it 3 - 1, with 10 minutes left. However, Belvo soon restored their 3 goal advantage, when Mooney scored from the penalty spot, with 5 minutes remaining, after Swan was dragged down in the box by the Sligo 'keeper, after Swan had bravely charged down his clearance, and was about to score. There were great celebrations at the final whistle by the players and supporters as Belvo won the FAI Youths Cup for the 3rd time n the club's history. Sligo Rovers are a good football team, with a number of talented players, but on the day they proved to be no match for this impressive Belvo side.

David Connolly bagged four goals to make it a memorable day for himself and his team-mates. He was in devastating form on Sunday after having a lean spell in front of goal in recent games.

Belvedere went in front after just four minutes when Paul Cahillane scored from the penalty spot, after a Pat's player handled in the box. Connolly then added two more before the break, to put the home side in a commanding position. However, the score could easily have been 3 - 3, except for poor finishing on Pat's behalf. They even had a goal ruled out for offside.

St. Pat's scored within two minutes of the restart and started to come into the game a bit more. But this was short -lived, as the Belvo's mid-field machine of Gary O'Toole, Ian Dunne, Karl Byrne and Cahillane took control of the game. During a sustained period of domination for the rest of the game, Connolly added two more goals along with a sublime header from Cillian Sheridan and one from Robert Lawless, who scored with his first touch, after coming on as a sub.

Needing to win this game in order to stay in with a chance of league honours, Belvedere duly did, thanks to fine second half goals from Gary O'Toole and Mitchell Casey. With Lourdes Celtic also in the chase for the title, it was always going to be a tough game for Belvo. After an indifferent first half, with few scoring chances, but with the hosts shading the play, it was difficult to see where the goals would come from. However in the second half, with the home side gaining the upper hand, the opening goal soon arrived. A nice move down the right wing involving Brendan Moloney and Karl Byrne resulted in Moloney putting in a superb cross into the box. With the Lourdes 'keeper hesitating, O'Toole glided through the static defenders to side-volley home. The visitors were stunned by this opening goal, but within minutes they were two goals behind. Belvedere went searching for a second goal immediately, as they pushed forward and were awarded a corner kick. Up stepped Paul Cahillane to deliver the perfect cross onto the head of Casey, who buried his header into the back of the net. Lourdes never recovered from this second goal, and the game finished with the hosts taking a deserved three points.

Belvedere F.C. 2 - 1 Shelbourne F.C. 

Manager Damien Byrne, for the second consecutive year, has led his team to the National Cup Final with a win in Fairview Park over near neighbours Shelbourne. With a battle for control going on in mid-field, it was no surprise there were few chances of note in the first half, apart from Cillian Sheridan's goal after 23 minutes, that is! Karl Byrne, playing on the right of mid-field, jinked his way into the box only to see his effort blocked, but with Sheridan close on hand, the ball fell kindly to him and he calmly slotted the ball into the net. Shelbourne had a half-chance to draw level as the half wore on, but failed to convert it.

The second half was a bit more open, and when Paul Cahillane delivered an excellent corner kick, Gary Breen rose highest to connect with a superb downward header, that had goal written all over it, but was thwarted when the ball hit the shoulder of the visiting 'keeper and eventually ended up in his hands. Brian Lonergan and Gary O'Toole worked tirelessly in mid-field to keep the Belvedere machine going. Ten minutes into the second half, Shels were beginning to show signs of belief in themselves and started to get a grip on matters. In a five minute spell they were unlucky not to score, when a goal-mouth scramble saw the ball eventually cleared, as Belvedere players threw their bodies between the ball and their goal. Shortly afterwards, Aiden McCluskey pulled off a spectacular save from a tremendous shot, hit by a Shels' mid-fielder, that was heading into the top corner. The inevitable happened however, two minutes later, as McCluskey was beaten by a fierce drive. Belvedere were shaken into action and the back four of Brendan Moloney, Breen, Mitchell Casey and Felim McMahon were determined that nothing else was going to get near their goal. And indeed, with Casey in superb form, he showed the way to the rest of the crew. Up front  David Connolly and Sheridan tried to prise an opening in the Shels' defence.

With 14 minutes  left in the game Belvedere were awarded a free kick on the half way line close to the left hand touch-line. Breen dispatched the free kick to the far side of the six yard box, where Casey arrived to power the ball across the 'keeper and into the net. (This is the second time this season that Casey has scored the winning goal against Shelbourne in Cup competitions). Shels were stunned and they never really pulled themselves up after that. Ian Dunne was introduced into the home side to stem any attack that Shels might have left. As the game entered the closing stages, Belvedere might have added to the score-line, but were denied by a fine save from the visiting goalkeeper. So, it's May 29th. at the A.U.L. Complex for the SFAI Evans Cup Final against the winners of the other semi-final between Corinthians from Cork and Saint Joseph's Boys.

 Never an easy place to get a result, the Lawn in Ballyfermot was the venue for this Major Division League tie on Sunday morning. Belvedere pressed hard for a goal in the opening stages of the match, as the hosts defended strongly. The pressure paid dividends however, when in the 15^th minute Terry McAuley’s deep cross into the penalty area was parried by the keeper, and Peter Keegan nipped in to score with a neat finish. Belvo continued to control the play, with David Walsh excellent in mid-field, while Belvo created a host of chances. However the finishing was below par, and so it remained 1 – 0 at the half time break. In the second half, Belvo continued to dictate the play, and Michael Galligan was unlucky not to add to Belvo’s lead, with a number of shots on goal, which really tested the home ‘keeper. However, despite dominating the latter stages of the match, Belvo failed to score again, and ran out 1 – 0 winners at the final whistle.

Goalkeeper Shane Roche proved to be the hero of the day for Belvedere at Whitehall on Saturday evening, when he saved two penalties in a dramatic shoot-out, after extra time had failed to divide the teams. The match was an extremely tense affair from the kick-off, with neither set of players wanting to make a mistake. Although there were few clear-cut openings in the first half, both teams tried to play attacking football and both defences had their work cut out. Belvo posed a threat down the right, through Shane Fitzgerald, while Timmy Purcell was impressive up front. Belvo's best effort of the opening period came through Conor Lenihan, who's shot drew a fine save from the Home Farm 'keeper. At the other end, Home Farm's lively front two were constantly making runs in behind Belvo's defence and always looked threatening, but without managing to find a way past Roche in goal. The second half began with Home Farm stepping up a gear. Their strong midfield was began to get a foothold on the game, and the age difference was more evident. Again, they were attempting to play in behind the Belvo rearguard and forced a number of corners. Despite the pressure, though, Belvo defended well, with Sean Fay solid at right full while Roche dealt comfortably with anything that came his way. Belvo then made changes, which brought them more into the match. James O'Sullivan replaced Lenihan, as Belvo switched to a 4-4-2 formation. O'Sullivan began to get his foot on the ball in mid-field, alongside captain Mark Healy, and Belvo were soon creating chances of their own. Derek Swan then replaced Fitzgerald out on the right, as Belvo pushed forward in search of a goal. Both keepers needed to be alert to make decent saves and both teams forced a few corners, as extra-time loomed. Home Farm again upped the pressure in extra-time as they searched for the winning goal. It wasn't to be, though, as the safe hands of Roche came to the rescue. And so, after a scoreless 120 minutes of play, a penalty shoot-out would decide on a winner. Michael Mooney converted Belvo's first penalty and Home Farm equalised with their first spot kick. Niall O'Reilly and Swan, in turn, both expertly despatched their penalties to the back of the net, while Roche brilliantly saved the next two Home Farm spot kicks. Needing to score only one more penalty kick to send Belvo into the cup final, up stepped Purcell, who fired home, amid scenes of great celebration by the Belvo players and supporters. It was cruel luck on a very good Home Farm side, who no doubt, will regret not taking their chances during the match, but full credit must go to Belvo for the great achievement in reaching their second FAI Cup Final this season.

Belvedere secured their place in the FAI Under17 Challenge Cup Final with an impressive 4 - 1 win over Fairview Rangers at Whitehall on Bank Holiday Sunday. The opening period was evenly contested as both sides sought to open the scoring. The Limerick visitors had the best chance to score early on, when their striker put the ball beyond Belvo's advancing 'keeper Shane Roche, but left back Niall O'Reilly was on hand to avert the danger with a timely clearance off the line. Belvo created two good scoring chances, following great runs by Shane Fitzgerald, who incidentally, was playing his first match in 5 weeks after an injury. Mark Keane opened the scoring for Belvo on 20 minutes, when following a neat passing movement with Timmy Purcell, he jinked past two Rangers' defenders before slotting the ball into the net. Seven minutes later, Keane scored again when he finished in style after Conor Powell had played him in with a great pass. Belvo continued to press the play and might have increased their lead further in the first half with good efforts from Fitzgerald, Keane and Purcell. Ten minutes into the second half, Fitzgerald went on a brilliant run down the right wing, skipping past two defenders, before delivering an excellent cross for Purcell to score. Derek Swan then replaced Fitzgerald, while Keane dropped back to mid-field alongside team captain Mark Healy. It wasn't long before Swan got his name on the score-sheet, when he latched onto a defence splitting pass from Keane, to make it 4 - 0 with a great finish. Rory Brown replaced Healy in mid-field, with 25 minutes left, as Belvo continued to control the play. The visitors, didn't lie down though, and they continued to press hard for a goal. However, Belvo's back four of Sean Fay, James Lee, Michael Mooney and O'Reilly remained solid as a rock, to deny the visitors' efforts. Dave Lawlor substituted for Roche in goal, with 15 minutes left to play, as Belvo maintained the pressure. However, with only minutes remaining in the match, Rangers were awarded a penalty kick for a hand ball, from which they scored a consolation goal. All in all, this was a great FAI Cup semi-final win for Belvo, but credit must be given to a sporting Fairview Rangers team that included a number of younger players. A mention also for the three young FAI match officials who controlled the match in a very professional manner.

In an exciting match played at Fairview Park on Tuesday evening, Belvedere qualified for the DDSL Goodson Cup Final with a hard fought 3 - 2 win over Drogheda Boys. The visitors lead 1 - 0 at half time, as Belvo fought hard to gain control of a tight match. However, 10 minutes after the restart, Adam Merry equalised for Belvo with a tap in goal following a great run by Darragh Raynor. Within 5 minutes, Belvo went ahead when Raynor outpaced 2 defenders with a solo run before shooting to the back of the net from 18 yards, to score a great goal. Drogheda drew level, 10 minutes later, with a well taken goal, to set up a tense finish to the match. Belvo continued to play good passing football and their efforts were rewarded, with 5 minutes remaining on the watch, when Graham Burke headed home from Raynor's excellent corner kick, to send Belvo into the final.

Mervue United Under 18's were visitors to Fairview Park on Sunday to play Belvedere Under 17's in the quarter-finals of the FAI Youth Challenge Cup. The older and physically stronger Galway side made most of the early running and enjoyed more of the possession, as Belvo fought hard to gain control of the match. Indeed, it was Mervue who opened the scoring on 18 minutes, as Belvo were caught square at the back, and the striker ran on to fire past 'keeper Shane Roche. The goal, however, seemed to spur Belvo into life and they gradually came more into the match and should have scored on two occasions. With the goal at his mercy, Mark Keane headed wide from Niall O'Reilly's in-swinging free kick, while Timmy Purcell blazed his shot over the bar, when a goal looked certain. Just before half time, Derek Swan equalised for Belvo when he latched onto a flicked pass from Conor Lenihan, before shooting to the back of the net. The second half saw a much improved Belvo performance as Mark Healy, Conor Powell and Purcell took control of the mid-field. Belvo played some good passing football as they stretched the Mervue defence. Indeed, Belvo should have gone in front when Swan was put clear on goal by Keane with a great pass, but his shot was blocked by the 'keeper. Five minutes later, full back Sean Fay played a delightful defence splitting pass to Lenihan, but with only the 'keeper to beat, he shot wide. With twenty minutes left to play, Belvo were awarded a controversial indirect free kick, inside the Mervue penalty area, as the referee penalised the visiting keeper for using bad language.  Keane deceived the defensive wall with an attempted free kick to James Lee on his right, before cleverly back heeling the ball to the waiting Lenihan, who blasted the ball to the back of the net. Mervue, clearly incensed by the decision, threw everything at Belvo in search of an equaliser. But, they were unable to break down a solid Belvo defence, who remained strong until the final whistle to qualify for the semi-finals.

A Graham Burke goal, scored 5 minutes from full time, proved to be the winner for Belvedere in this Under 11's Premier League match. In a tight match played at the excellent Gannon Park, both defences were on top early in the match. Belvo's right full back Glen O'Brien, was outstanding on the day, and was named man of the match by Manager Frank McGrath. Belvo scored a great second goal when Neil Byrne hit a 30 yard free kick straight to the back of the net, but the referee somehow ruled it off-side. This win keeps Belvo on track for the league title, and also sets them up nicely for their DDSL Goodson Cup semi-final tie with Drogheda Boys at Fairview Park on Monday evening.

This was a pulsating and hard fought cup tie, the reality of which is not at all reflected in the 5 - 1 scoreline. Belvedere were worthy winners on the night and benefited from two very late goals, as Lourdes Celtic were punished for taking risks at the back. In the initial stages of the game the play swung from end to end, as the host's front players proved to be tricky opponents on the night and were causing problems for the Belvo defence, while at the other end, the visitors were finding great joy down the flanks. Aiden McCluskey in goal, made two very good saves early on, as Lourdes pressed hard for a goal, but it was Belvo who scored first, following some good work by Karl Byrne, who found David Connolly in space on the angle of the box. Connolly then picked out Paul Cahillane at the far post, and he turned inside and shot home with his right foot, to score a great goal. Indeed, Cahillane might have doubled his tally minutes later when he crashed a superb drive off the cross-bar, with the home 'keeper well beaten. However, Lourdes responded with added determination and from the rebound they counter attacked and equalised through their ever alert striker, who rode two tackles before calmly stroking the ball into the corner of the net. In the second half, Belvo's defence tightened up considerably. Mitchel Casey and Gary Breen were monumental at the heart of the defence, and were ably assisted by full backs Brendan Moloney and Felim McMahon. Gary O'Toole and Brian Lonergan began to win the mid-field battle for Belvo, while Cillian Sheridan and Connolly came more and more into the game. Indeed it was Connolly who headed Byrne's deep cross from the right, back across goal, forcing a scrambled clearance from the hosts. The ball came to Lonergan on the edge of the box and he drove his shot, low and hard, through a crowded goal-mouth into the net, to put Belvo ahead, 11 minutes after the restart. Within minutes, Sheridan had made it 3 - 1 to Belvo, when he scored from a similar movement, albeit from the opposite wing. Lourdes didn't lie down however, and they came close to scoring on a couple of occasions. Ian Dunne entered as a tactical substitute, as Belvo sought to consolidate their lead and were determined not to let their advantage slip. Robert Lawless and Keith Cox also played their part in the later stages of the match, having come off the bench. And as the final whistle loomed, Byrne cleverly intercepted a careless pass by a Lourdes' defender across the edge of the box before tapping the ball into an empty net, to make it 4 - 1. Almost on the stroke of full time, Sheridan had the easiest of tasks to walk the ball into the net for Belvo's fifth goal, following a similar mistake by the home defence. At the final whistle there was great celebrations as Belvo qualified for the National Cup semi-finals, a great reward for a great team effort. However, this was a hard fought victory for Belvo, despite the scoreline, which doesn't do justice at all to Lourdes' efforts on the night.

An injury hit Belvedere produced a great team performance to win 2 - 1 over Cherry Orchard at the Lawn in Ballyfermot. The early stages of the match were even, with both defences on top. Belvo took the lead on 18 minutes when Conor Powell won the ball in mid-field, before finding Mark Keane out on the left with an excellent pass. Keane jinked past two defenders before squaring the ball to Powell who fired home from the edge of the box. Cherry Orchard equalised on the half hour, when a mix up in the Belvo defence allowed their striker to score with a looping shot over the stranded Belvo 'keeper, Dave Lawlor. In the second half, Belvo had the better of the play as they stretched the home defence. Belvo's Rory Brown, Mark Healy and Powell worked hard and controlled the mid-field. However, the hosts continued to be dangerous on the break and Belvo's back four of Niall O'Reilly, Sean Fay, James Lee and Under 16's player Brendan Dawson needed to be at their best. The winning goal was scored on 63 minutes, when O'Reilly played a quick free kick to Derek Swan on the right, who then delivered a great cross to the far post for Michael Mooney to head home. Both sides created further chances in the last 15 minutes, without success, but at the final whistle it was Belvo who took all 3 points.

Rovers went ahead after 5 minutes when they caught the Belvedere defence asleep.  It was 20 minutes later before Belvo replied courtesy of a Garry O'Toole goal, when he struck his shot with great power into the roof of the net from 25 yards. Paul Cahillane added number two shortly after and Cillian Sheridan made it 3 - 1 before the half ended. Cahillane got his second of the day courtesy of some great attacking play from David Connolly. The Hoops had the last say when they scored with three minutes left, after a blunder from the home 'keeper.

In a one sided match, played at a wet and windy Johnstown Park on Sunday, Belvedere lead 2 - 0 at the half time break, with goals from Timmy Purcell ( 10 minutes ) and Conor Lenihan ( 25 minutes ). Tolka had defended deeply, while Belvo created numerous scoring chances, but failed to finish them off. Early in the second half, Belvo went 3 - 0 ahead when Derek Swan scored when Mark Keane's shot on goal was parried by the Tolka 'keeper. Lenihan continued to cause problems for the home defence with his mazy runs down the flanks, but he was continuously hacked down by the Tolka full back and he was eventually forced to retire. Rory Brown replaced the injured Lenihan, with 30 minutes remaining, as Belvo continued to press the play. Michael Mooney put the result beyond doubt, with 20 minutes remaining, when he scored Belvo's fourth goal from the penalty spot, after Keane was up-ended having made a great individual run into the box.

Having lost to Belvedere in the cup recently, Templeogue United came to Fairview Park on Saturday hoping to extract their revenge with a league win. However, they were met by a resolute Belvo team who produced a spirited performance on the day. While the match remained scoreless at the half time break, Belvo should have been well ahead, having missed a number "openers" in the first half. Ten minutes after the restart, Danny Joyce fired home to give Belvo the lead, following some good work by Patsy Hutch and Luke Dillon. Belvo continued to control the match as they pressed forward in search of a second goal. Belvo defended well also and the few chances on goal that Templeogue had, were denied by 'keeper Gavin Flanagan, who was in great form. Although the final score was only one-nil, this was a well deserved win for Belvo and it keeps their interest in the league title, alive.

The journey home from Kilkenny on Sunday evening, somehow seemed that bit shorter for Belvedere Under 17's, having secured their place in the quarter-finals of the FAI Youth Challenge Cup. With three players sidelined with injuries in recent weeks, Belvo introduced a number of positional changes for this cup match. The changes certainly produced dividends, as Belvo took the lead after only 6 minutes, when Under 16's player Timmy Purcell, fired home from Conor Lenihan's excellent cross, following a good build up down the left. The hosts created some early chances too, but they were denied by an alert Belvo 'keeper Dave Lawlor, who was quickly off his line, to avert any possible danger. Next on the score sheet was Conor Powell, after 13 minutes, when, having spotted the keeper off his line, he cleverly lobbed the ball into the net from all of 35 yards out. Within minutes, Powell had grabbed his second and Belvo's third goal, with a strike from outside the box, that gave the home 'keeper no chance. Five minutes later, Rangers managed to pull a goal back, when Belvo lost possession as they broke out of defence. However, Belvo's 3 goal advantage was restored by Lenihan with a great shot past the 'keeper, just on the stroke of half time. In the second half, Belvo continued to dictate the play and should have increased their lead further, as they created chance after chance on goal. Derek Swan replaced Rory Brown, Dave Martin came on for Lenihan, while Belvo Under 15's player Gary Breen substituted for team captain Mark Healy. Swan soon began to make his mark with some fine runs at the Rangers' defence, and his efforts were rewarded with a well taken goal, 10 minutes from full time, following a neat one-two with Mark Keane.

A Stephen Traynor goal, scored after 10 minutes, proved to be enough to send Belvedere through to the semi-finals of the SFAI Troy Cup, at Fairview Park on Saturday. Belvedere had the better of the play throughout the match and might have won by a wider margin, had Lee Dixon and Lloyd Cooney put away some of the many great scoring chances they created. Danny Henry in goal for Belvo had very little to do in the match, thanks mainly to a solid central defence pairing of Gavin McArdle and Garrett O'Callaghan. The winning goal came from a lovely move by Stephen Doyle, who broke strongly from mid-field, before delivering a measured pass to Traynor, who gave the visiting 'keeper no chance with his shot to the back of the net. Late in the match however, Letterkenny might have snatched an equaliser, following a dangerous break away, but their striker's shot was off target. And so at the final whistle, there was great celebration by the Belvo players and supporters as they secured a place in the semi-finals. Manager Wesley Robb felt that score didn't reflect Belvo's dominance on the day, but he was nonetheless delighted with his teams' achievement in reaching the last four of the competition.

Another impressive performance as Belvedere ran out comfortable winners in Johnstown Park on Tuesday evening. Robert Lawless opened the scoring on 5 minutes when he guided the ball into the net following a superb cross from Paul Cahillane. Ten minutes later, Karl Byrne struck a sweet strike into the net from the edge of the box after he created an opening for himself to score. Brendan Moloney was denied his first goal of the season after he went on one of his mazy runs and saw the home keeper save his effort. All was not lost however, as Cahillane was on hand to neatly chip the ball over the keeper for the third goal of the game. Tolka were awarded a penalty when Mitchell Casey handled in the area.  From the resulting spot kick, the ball came back off the post and was quickly ushered up-field to Byrne, who showed excellent skill in getting past two defenders before cheekily "dinking" the ball into the net. Goal number five came from the boot of Garry Breen, who saw his free kick from 35 yards go through the hands of the home 'keeper. Apart from gaining three points, tonight marked the return of Ian Dunne, after six months out through injury. Belvo management and players were glad to see Ian doing the warm up and getting five minutes of play. Also, all the team and management would like to wish James Cumberton a speedy recovery from the bad injury he received in the recent match against Bohemians.

A place in the semi-finals of the Barry Cup awaits Belvedere following their great away win over Ballincollig F.C. in Cork on Sunday. Belvo survived a nervy opening few minutes, when the hosts narrowly missed scoring with a header from a dangerous in-swinging corner kick. Despite this, Belvo soon settled down and went ahead on 15 minutes when Steven Nolan fired home following a lovely passing movement involving James O'Sullivan, Gary Hilliard and Andy Montgomery. Indeed, Belvo might have gone further ahead, shortly afterwards, with two great efforts, but Montgomery's shot on goal was denied by the upright, while Hilliard's shot, somehow went narrowly wide, when a goal looked odds on. However, it was Ballincollig who scored next, to draw level, on the half hour, when a weak back pass to Belvo 'keeper was intercepted by the home striker and he made no mistake. In the second half, the visitors continued to control the play as they stretched the home defence, time after time. The pressure paid off, when Sean Young scored a lovely goal, following a nice move, which he himself had started from a throw in, before playing a neat one-two with Nolan, which put him through on goal. With 15 minutes remaining, Timmy Purcell made it 3 - 1 for the visitors, when he beat the 'keeper with looping shot. At this stage Belvo looked to be comfortable, but when Hilliard was dismissed for second yellow card, following a late challenge, things soon changed, as Belvo were forced to defend. With a minute of normal time remaining in the match, a high cross into the Belvo penalty area was caught cleanly by 'keeper Colin Cassidy, but he was then bundled off the ball by the hosts' attacker and the ball ended up in the back of the net. Despite claims from the Belvo players and coaches for the foul on the 'keeper, the referee allowed the goal to stand. Six long minutes of additional time was then played before the referee finally blew for full time, as the Belvo players and supporters celebrated. A special word of thanks to Ballincollig F.C. for their hospitality after the match, as they served up some delicious hot food and drinks to the Belvo team and supporters before they headed back to Dublin.

Easter Sunday 2005 is a day that Belvedere Under 17's will hope to forget, as they crashed out of the Leinster Youths Cup on the wrong end of a 4 - 1 score-line, to local Fairview Park rivals Sheriff Y.C., at the AUL Complex. Belvo's problems started even before they took to the field, with news that goalkeeper Shane Roche couldn't make the match, due to a problem with transport. This proved to be a major loss on the day, as Belvo conceded two soft goals in the first 15 minutes, due to basic handling errors by the replacement 'keeper. Belvo tried to bounce back from the sucker punch of the 2 goals, but despite some great runs by Shane Fitzgerald into the box, the finishing was well below par. Belvo were unlucky not to score, five minutes from half time, when, following a nice one two combination with Mark Keane, Conor Lenihan fired in a rocket of a shot that looked destined for the back of the net, only to be denied by a great diving save by the Sheriff 'keeper. After the restart, Belvo piled on the pressure in search of a goal, as Sheriff defended deeply. However, Belvo failed to score the goal that would get them back into the match, despite creating some good chances. As Belvo pushed forward in search of that elusive first goal, Sheriff counter attacked with great effect and they had Belvo scrambling desperately to defend at times. One such counter attack lead to Belvo conceding a third goal, with 15 minutes left, when Belvo's central defenders failed to win a header which allowed the Sheriff striker in to score with ease. Derek Swan then replaced Timmy Purcell up-front, as Belvo tried to salvage something from the game. With 10 minutes left, Belvo did manage to score, when Michael Mooney fired home from the penalty spot, after left back Conor Powell was fouled in the box, following a lovely pass from Swan. But it proved to be too little too late. With nothing to loose, Belvo committed players forward in numbers in search of a second goal, and in doing so, left themselves exposed at the back. The final nail in the coffin for Belvo came when Sheriff scored goal number four, following a long ball out of defence, and with Belvo out-numbered at the back, the striker went on to finish in style. Belvo will be very disappointed with their performance in this cup match, but take nothing away from Sheriff Y.C., they took their chances well and were deserving winners on the day.

Felim McMahon got the winner with a 20 yard volley, mid - way through the second half of this difficult game for the visitors.  Already down to 12 fit players before the game, matters weren't helped for Belvedere when James Cumberton limped off after only 5 minutes. However the team re-grouped and hoped no one else would get a knock. Belvedere could have won more convincingly if they had put away some of the many chances they created.  But it wasn't to be and the solitary goal by McMahon saw Belvo gain another 3 points which puts them four points clear in the race for the title.

This was Belvedere's second visit to Cork in recent weeks, having played against Cork City in the previous round of the Cup. Belvo found it difficult enough to deal with the very direct type of football played by the home team in the opening 20 minutes. Maymount, playing with both a strong wind and a hill in their favour in the first half, went a goal up after 15 minutes, when they scored from a free kick on the edge of the penalty area. However, the visitors gradually took control of the match and equalised from an excellent Shane Fitzgerald free kick on 40 minutes. Within 3 minutes of the re-start, Belvo went in front when Michael Mooney cleverly back-heeled the ball into the net, after Maymount had failed to clear a dangerous in-swinging corner kick from Conor Lenihan. Belvo continued to play some good passing football, causing all sorts of problems for the home defence. Indeed, Belvo were unlucky not to extend their lead on at least 3 occasions, following some great passing moves. With 15 minutes remaining, Timmy Purcell secured victory for Belvo when he scored with a great shot into the top corner of the net. This was a great away cup win for Belvo, in difficult weather conditions, against a tough Maymount side, who fought until the final whistle.

Saint Kevin's Boys, aided by a strong breeze, went a goal ahead after only 5 minutes, as an injury hit Belvedere side was caught napping at the back. Belvo had to fight hard to get back into the match, and it wasn't until the 30th minute that they equalised. A nice passing movement involving Karl Byrne and David Connolly found Gary O'Toole in space, and his rocket of a shot was only parried by the 'keeper, before Paul Cahillane nipped in to score of the rebound. Five minutes into the second half, Belvo took the lead when Cillian Sheridan finished off a well worked move with a neatly placed shot past the 'keeper. However, the visitors were back on level terms within 6 minutes, as sloppy defending by the hosts allowed the Saint Kevin's striker in to score. Belvo knuckled down and started to play some good passing football, causing problems for the visitors' defence. The winning goal was scored with 20 minutes remaining when Brian Lonergan combined well with Byrne, who in turn found Connolly with defence splitting pass. The Belvo striker then hit a pile driver of a shot on goal that proved unstoppable, despite the best efforts of the Saint Kevin's 'keeper. This was a good win for Belvo, against strong opposition on Saint Patrick's Day, and the 3 points gained keeps Damien Byrne's team in the chase for the league title.

In this top of the table clash at Fairview Park, on Sunday, Belvedere needed to take all 3 points to stay in touch with the league leaders Crumlin United. Belvo lead 1 - 0 after 15 minutes thanks to a well taken goal by Sean Young. Shortly afterwards, only cruel luck denied Bevo doubling their lead when a great shot on goal by Steven Nolan rebounded off the upright, with the visitors' 'keeper well beaten. Crumlin equalised mid-way through the first half, and it remained even at the half time break. Crumlin were on top for most of the second half, but they were unable to really penetrate a solid Belvo defence. Indeed, Colin Cassidy in goal for Belvo had very little to do, thanks to some fine defending by his back four. And so at the final whistle it finished even at 1 - 1 and the points shared, but this result will suit league leaders Crumlin as they maintain their grip on the title race.

Injuries and suspensions forced Belvedere into a number of positional changes for this league tie at Bushy Park on Sunday. Belvo went a goal behind early in the match, when fill in centre back Michael Mooney, was dispossessed by the Rangers striker, who then lobbed the advancing 'keeper Shane Roche with ease. Within minutes however, Belvo were on level terms following a nice move down the left involving Conor Leniihan, Dave Martin and Mark Keane who jinked past two defenders before finishing with a great shot on goal. Rangers scored a second goal on twenty minutes when the referee failed to blow for an obvious off-side. Rory Brown replaced Gerry McGovern for the second half, as Belvo upped the pressure on the Rangers defence. Belvo had numerous chances to score but failed to finish at the vital time, while the Rangers 'keeper brought off some great saves. This was a disappointing performance from a Belvo team who face an away FAI Under 17 Cup tie in Cork against Maymount next Sunday.

Three first half goals and one more after the break, without reply, secured Belvedere's place in the semi-finals of the Goodson Cup. Adam Merry opened the scoring for Belvo on 8 minutes when he capitalised on an error by the home keeper, to slot the ball home. Seven minutes later, Graham Burke doubled Belvo's lead when he fired home from close distance, when the Crumlin defence failed to clear their lines. Belvo went 3 goals ahead, just before the half time whistle, when Darragh Raynor brilliantly volleyed home a great cross from Gavin Ivory. Glen O'Brien replaced Ciaran Heapes for the second half, as Belvo continued to force the play. Gavin Ivory sealed the result for Belvo, with 15 minutes remaining, when he went on a great solo run, skipping past 2 defenders before finishing in style with a shot to the roof of the net.

In a very tight match, Belvedere played the better football on the day, but they were unable to break down the physically stronger Cherry Orchard side. The visitors lead 1 - 0 at half time, having scored on 15 minutes. Belvo equalised 10 minutes into the second half, when Gavin McArdle scored from a Lee Dixon cross. Despite further pressure from Belvo in the second half, the match finished all even at the end of normal time, and so the match headed into extra time. Early into the first period, Cherry Orchard scored again, when a long ball forward deceived the Belvo rear guard and the visitors' striker ran on to score. Belvo weren't taking this lying down, however, and they really pressurised the visitor's defence, but they were unable to find a way through on goal. And so at the final whistle it was Cherry Orchard who advanced to the semi-final of the Liam Brady Cup.

At a sunny Fairview Park on Sunday, Belvedere secured their place in the last eight of the SFAI Under 16 Barry Cup with a 2 - 0 win over Portlaoise F.C. Trevor Boyle opened the scoring after only 8 minutes when he headed home a lovely cross from John Connellan. Having conceded this early goal, the visitors then defended deeply, while Belvo piled on the pressure in search of goal number two. But despite having most of the possession throughout the match, and plenty of shots on goal from James O'Sullivan and Timmy Purcell in particular, Belvo failed to increase their lead until almost the last minute of the match. Provider for the first goal became scorer of the second when Connellan headed Kieran Moloney's delightful cross past the visitor's 'keeper, to seal the result and send Belvo into the quarter-finals of the Barry Cup.

Two early goals from Karl Byrne and Cillian Sheridan set Belvedere up for a comfortable home win against Drogheda Boys.  With the home side playing some fine football throughout this game it was no surprise that they added three more second half goals for an excellent win. Byrne got his second along with strikes from Paul Cahillane and Keith Cox.

A lack lustre performance from a Belvedere side, who suffered their first defeat of the season, as well as exiting from the Tab Cup, at the AUL Complex on Sunday. The visitors went two goals behind early in the match, one from a free kick, and the other as slack defending allowed Shels' striker in to score with ease. Belvo should have pulled a goal back 10 minutes from the break, but Mark Keane headed over, from a great Shane Fitzgerald cross, following a nice move down the right side. Gerry McGovern replaced Dave Martin for the second half, but despite creating a number of scoring chances, Belvo failed to close the gap. Indeed, Shels went 3 - 0 ahead, 10 minutes after the restart, when they scored from outside the box, after Belvo had failed to clear from a corner kick. McGovern managed to pull a goal back for Belvo with a good header, with 30 minutes remaining. However, despite creating several good openings on goal, Belvo failed to capitalise on their chances. Belvo's difficulties weren't helped at all when central defender Sean Fay was red carded, along with a Shels' attacker, with 15 minutes left to play.

Goals from Tommy Madden, Michael Tobin and an own goal by the visitors, helped secure a Belvedere win over Finglas team WFTA, at Fairview Park on Saturday. However, it took extra time to divide the two teams, as the match ended all even at 1 - 1. Belvo had made most of the running and lead 1 - 0 early into the second half when Madden finished in style. However, WFTA weren't taking this lying down, and they equalised in the closing minutes of the match, to force extra time. Belvo maintained the pressure after the restart, and it paid off when the visitors' conceded an own goal, before Micheal Tobin sealed victory with a well taken goal. Manager Derek O'Brien felt that his team played well on the day and that they showed great character in bouncing back after the late equaliser, to secure a cup semi-final spot, in extra time.

A good team performance all round was how Manager Wesley Robb described Belvedere' s win over Leixlip United at Fairview Park, on Saturday. Special praise is due for James Perry who had a great game and scored two goals, one in each half as Belvo recorded a great win. Mark Maher scored Belvo's second goal with a great finish on 25 minutes, to make it 2 - 0 at the half time break. The only negative was that Belvo's Ryan Byrne was injured following a clash of heads after 10 minutes and he had to be substituted. Let's hope that Ryan's injury is not too serious and that he recovers in time for next week's match.

Belvedere produced a polished display of football as they advanced to the quarter-finals of the SFAI Evan Cup on Sunday, against a spirited Kilmallock team. The Limerick visitors proved to be no match on the day for a Belvedere side, who dominated the play right from the kick off. Belvo went ahead after only 2 minutes, thanks to Cillian Sheridan's headed goal from close range, following a dangerous cross into the box. David Connolly doubled Belvo's advantage, 3 minutes later, with a great goal, and Gary O'Toole made it 3 - 0 with a lovely finish, with only 10 minutes played. Stunned by these early goals, the visitors tried to get back into the match, but Belvo were in top form as they commanded all areas of the pitch. Two more goals followed from Sheridan, to complete his hat-trick, as Belvo cruised to a comprehensive victory. To be fair to the visitors, they never stopped trying and they were rewarded with a consolation goal, 10 minutes from full time.

With a place in the quarter- finals of the SFAI Troy Cup as the reward for the winners, Belvedere Under 13's Premier team headed north to play Drogheda Boys, at Rathmulen on Saturday. Despite the heavy rain during the week, the pitch was in reasonably good condition. After a slow start from both teams, centre mid-fielder Paul Corry opened the scoring for Belvo on 20 minutes when he hit a cracker of a shot from all of 25 yards out, that gave the home 'keeper no chance. However, Belvo's lead didn't last very long, as Drogheda replied within minutes to level the score. From here on it proved to be a very tight match, with both defences on top, and at the half time break the score remained even. In a scrappy second half, neither team managed to gain control of the match, resulting in very few scoring chances. When full time failed to produce a winner, the match headed into extra time. At the end of the 20 minutes, it was still even and a penalty shootout decided the winner. Both teams scored 3 penalties each out of the first five and so it headed to sudden death. When Drogheda's penalty kick was saved, up stepped Garrett O'Callaghan who dispatched his spot kick to the back of the net, to send Belvo into the quarter-finals, amid scenes of great celebration by the Belvo players and supporters. Hero of the day for Belvo was goalkeeper Daniel Henry, who brilliantly saved four of the penalty kicks. It was hard luck on Drogheda Boys, but Belvo manager Wesley Robb was delighted with the win, even though he felt his team hadn't played up to their ability on the day.

Saint Joseph's Boys came up trumps in this game, seven days after Belvedere had won 3-1 against them at Fairview Park.  A first half goal was enough to see Joey's into the semi-final of the Conway Cup. Although Felim McMahon "scored" a perfectly good goal, five minutes from time, the referee deemed the ball had gone wide before it was crossed to him. It was later agreed by supporters and managers of both teams that the ball was "in" play before being crossed. Overall Joey's deserved the win.

Due to injuries, Belvedere were forced to field a team that included a number of positional changes. Belvo's problems were soon added to, when left back Conor Powell was injured, early into the match, following a late tackle. Dave Martin came on at wide left, while Conor Lenihan dropped back in place of Powell. Belvo struggled to gain control of the mid-field, resulting in a poor supply for Mark Keane and Derek Swan, up front. Cherry Orchard went a goal up after 15 minutes, when the Belvo defence failed to deal with a long ball forward, and despite claims for off-side, the visitors' striker fired home. Gerry McGovern replaced the injured Rory Brown in mid-field for the second half, and he was joined by Keane who switched positions with Michael Mooney. The switch worked and Belvo began to gain control of the match, as they launched wave after wave of attack on the visitors' goal. Cherry Orchard's 'keeper was called on to make a number of fine saves, as Belvo went in search of an equaliser. With seconds only remaining in the match, Belvo won a corner kick on the right. From Lenihan's in-swinging kick, James Lee rose highest to score with a bullet of a header, to send the match into extra time. Cherry Orchard, however, remained dangerous on the break, and Shane Roche needed to be at his best, in the Belvo goal, to deny their striker on at least two occasions. The winning goal came 5 minutes into the second period of extra time. Following good work in mid-field by Keane, the ball was played to Lenihan on the left, and he delivered a lovely cross into the box for Mooney to expertly head home, giving the 'keeper no chance.

This was a match Belvedere will hope to forget, as both teams failed to create many clear-cut chances. Belvedere did manage to put the ball in the back of the net, but the goal was disallowed for off-side by the referee. When the 80 minutes failed to produce a goal, the match went into two periods of 10 minutes extra time. However, the dull pattern of play continued and the score line remained at 0 - 0 at the final whistle. The result was then decided by a penalty shoot-out. Missed penalties were the order of the day for both sides, but it was Cherry Orchard who advanced to the semi-finals of the Paul McGrath Cup winning 2 - 1 on penalties.

At a windswept Fairview Park on Sunday, Belvedere overcame the elements and a useful Joey's side to gain three valuable points in order to keep in touch with leaders Cherry Orchard. After only fifty seconds on the clock, Karl Byrne latched onto a through ball from Garry Breen and calmly slotted the ball home under the body of the advancing Joey's keeper with a firmly struck left footed strike. Ten minutes later it was 2-0 when Breen headed a goal from a corner off the boot of Paul Cahillane. Joey's came more into the game then and it was only a matter of time before they got a goal themselves. It duly came with just one minute of the half remaining. Second half with a lot of hustle and bustle, but with few scoring chances. A solid Belvo rearguard kept the dominating Joe's at bay. Byrne was brought back to mid-field, and it was from then on that Belvedere started to gain the upper hand in this game. David Connolly was left on his own up front and did the necessary work required. Brendan Moloney, Mitch Casey, Garry  Breen, Cillian Sheridan and keeper Aiden McCluskey were dominant in keeping Joey's at bay, as they searched for an equaliser. With five minutes left on the clock, Belvedere wrapped up the three points when Casey rose highest to head home a superb cross from Cahillane.

If ever there was a case for Summer football, it had to be last Saturday. Ice cold winds, driving rain and sleet all made for some miserable conditions for both sets of young players. Belvedere however, made the most of the conditions and lead Leicester Celtic 4 - 0 at the half time break, thanks to well taken goals from Anthony Corcoran, Danny Joyce, Lee Swords and Adam O'Brien, who's goal was nicely set up for him by Luke Dillon. After the break, Belvo took up where they left off, as they forced their visitors to defend deeply. Belvo's pressure paid off when Joyce scored his second and Belvo's fifth goal midway through the second half, to put the result beyond doubt.

After 110 minutes of play, 4 goals and 22 penalties, Belvedere eventually edged past Cork City in an epic FAI Under 17 Challenge Cup 4^th round clash at Bishopstown, Cork on Saturday. Atrocious weather conditions on the day, with gale force winds, coupled with spells of driving rain, made life really difficult for both teams. Belvo went a goal behind within the first minute when a long hopeful ball out of Cork defence was held up in the wind. This allowed the hosts’ attacker to keep the ball in play and whip in a dangerous cross, which, aided by the strong wind, deceived Belvo ‘keeper Shane Roche and allowed the City attacker in to score with ease. Belvo gradually got to grips with the conditions and dominated the first half, after that early shock, forcing numerous corners and enjoying most of the possession. On the half hour, Belvo equalised with an excellent in-swinging, wind assisted, free kick from Conor Lenihan, into the top left corner of the net. After the break, Belvo continued to force the play, but it was Cork who scored next, against the run of play, when their striker headed home from two yards out, as slack defending failed to cut out a cross in from the left. This spurred Belvo into life and the City ‘keeper was forced into making a number of fine saves, the pick of which was a double save from Mark Keane and Michael Mooney, right out of the top drawer. Belvo equalised 12 minutes from time, when centre back Sean Fay brilliantly headed home Shane Fitzgerald’s in-swinging cross from the left. Extra time followed, as the weather conditions worsened still. Both goalkeepers were called on to made crucial saves to keep their sides in the game. And so to the penalty shoot-out. Both sides scored 5 penalties each, although Belvo ‘keeper Roche was unlucky not to stop the first one, which he got a hand to. From here on it was sudden death, as the rest of the Belvo eleven expertly dispatched their penalty kicks to the back of the net. With the pressure really mounting, Cork City’s 11^th penalty was blasted over the cross bar, much to the relief and joy of the Belvo team and supporters. It was cruel luck on Cork City in the end, but a great result for Belvo, away from home, considering the conditions on the day.

Esker Celtic opened the score line at approx. 12 minutes into the game. Early on in the first half, Belvo were getting pushed off the ball by the aggressive play of Esker Celtic. However, Craig English (Forward) levelled the score for Belvo with 3 minutes to go in the first half. Mid-way through the second half, Esker scored a soft goal to lead 2 -1. At this stage of the game, with the visitors' aggressiveness and the ref's decisions in favour of the away team, you would understand if the Belvo yearlings dropped their heads. However, Belvo’s true spirit shone through and they took complete control of the game. With 2 minutes to go, Adam Morgan (Midfield) had a great shot on target parried by the Esker goalkeeper, and English was on hand to bury the loose ball into the back of the net for the Belvo's deserved equaliser. Brandon Hawkins had an outstanding game in between the posts for Belvo. And so at the final whistle, it ended all even at 2- 2.

Premier side Belvedere, proved too strong on the day for their Major League opponents Home Farm in this Under 13 Liam Brady Cup match at Mobhi Road, Glasnevin. Belvo lead 1 - 0 at the half time break, thanks to Lee Dixon's well taken goal on 20 minutes. In the second half, it was all Belvo, as they scored 3 more goals without reply. Lloyd Cooney scored a beauty from a volley, 5 minutes after the restart, and this was followed 10 minutes later with a strike from outside the box from Donal Lenihan, to make it 3 - 0. With 10 minutes remaining, Gavin McArdle completed the scoring for Belvo with a great finish, following a corner kick.

On Saturday, Belvedere changed their match day to Saturday and made the trip to Carlow to play New Oak in the SFAI Under 15 Evans Cup. In a very one-sided game, Belvedere produced some fine football, and scored excellent goals, to ease themselves past a home side which tried, but couldn't match the superiority of the reigning National Champions. Scorers for Belvo were : David Connolly (2), Paul Cahillane(2), Karl Byrne, Garry O'Toole and Cillian Sheridan to secure a comprehensive win and send Belvedere into the last 16 of the SFAI Under 15 Evans Cup.

The weather on the day was enough to put any player off the game. The pitch at Coldcut Road was soft, and there was no dressing rooms. The match should have been switched due to the weather and the height of the grass. Ballyfermot entered into the game as league leaders, while, Belvo were down 4 players and were lucky to field the bare 7. However, both teams had the same conditions with no advantage on either side, and this did not stop the game from producing some electric, end to end, entertaining football. Leon Cumberton and Sean Teeling were invincible in defence and Ballyfermot were unable to break them down. Belvo controlled most of the game, but were unlucky not to score on several occasions; English again proved that he is a striker to be reckoned. In this day and age, it’s not often that we have good words to say about the opposition’s sportsmanship. Ballyfermot players, managers, supporters and indeed the "stand-in ref" treated the Belvo team the way, I’m sure, they would like to be treated when playing away from home. Adam Morgan, Niall Doyle, Pierce Egan, Brandon Hawkins all put in great performances for Belvo and the game finished up 0- 0.

An away fixture against Cork City in the FAI Under 17 Challenge Cup awaits Belvedere following their 3 - 0 win over Saint Patrick's Athletic, at Fairview Park on Sunday. Belvo went a goal up after only 3 minutes, when, following a good move down the right, the ball was played to Scott Weir, who's shot on goal deflected in off a defender, past the helpless Saint's 'keeper. Despite this early goal, Saint Pat's settled down and defended well. However, there was nothing they could about Belvo's second goal, a real beauty,  scored on 17 minutes. The move started in the right back position, when Niall O'Reilly cleverly intercepted a pass intended for the visitors' left winger. He picked out Shane Fitzgerald on the right touch-line with a measured pass. Fitzie raced off down the wing, leaving three defenders in his wake, before delivering an inch perfect cross, for Mark Keane to expertly volley home. Saint Pat's however, weren't taking this lying down, and they proved to be dangerous on the break. Casual defending by Belvo allowed the visitors' striker in for a good shot on goal, only to be denied by a fine diving save by Belvo 'keeper Shane Roche. In the second half, Belvo continued to press the play, and they forced Pat's to defend deeply at times. 15 minutes after the restart, Belvo won a free kick out on the left for a foul on Conor Lenihan. Fitzie's delightful in-swinging free kick was headed home by centre back Sean Fay, despite the valiant efforts of the Saint Pat's keeper.

The Lawn in Ballyfermot is never an easy place to go and get a result, but on Sunday, Belvedere produced a great team performance to win 4 - 1 over Cherry Orchard. Steven Nolan opened the scoring for Belvo on 10 minutes when he headed home a John Connellan cross into the box. Belvo doubled their lead 10 minutes later, following some good work by Kieran Maloney and Timmy Purcell, who's left footed cross found the unmarked Nolan and he scored with a tap in. Cherry Orchard pulled a goal back soon after, when Belvo conceded a soft goal from a corner kick. However, Belvo bounced back and restored their two goal advantage just before half time. Good play from Gary Hilliard found Purcell free on the edge of the penalty area, and he gave the 'keeper no chance with his pile-driver of a shot into the back of the net. From the re-start, Cherry Orchard came out all guns blazing and they had Belvo on the back foot for long periods. Belvo's defence remained tight however, as they absorbed the pressure with some great defending. Goalkeeper Colin Cassidy was in great form, and he commanded his area with great authority. Having weathered the storm, Belvo began to take control of the game again, and increased their lead further, with 15 minutes remaining. Good work by Andy Montgomery and Nolan sent Purcell clear and he made no mistake with his shot on goal to seal a great result for Belvo.

Great finishing was the order of the day for Belvedere as they outplayed Ballyoulster United at Loughlinstown Road on Sunday. Despite conceding a goal from a penalty kick, Belvo lead 2  - 1 at the half time break, thanks to well taken goals from Michael Galligan on 14 minutes and Craig Dunne on the half hour. Belvedere totally dominated the play in the second half, scoring four more goals without reply. Belvo's third goal came 5 minutes after the restart when Galligan fired home, after a good build up, and this was followed shortly afterwards with a neat strike from Alan Homan. Terry McAuley increased Belvo's lead further with a fine effort that gave the Ballyoulster 'keeper no chance on 35 minutes, while Peter Keegan completed the scoring for Belvo with a lovely chip over the advancing 'keeper, in the dying seconds of the match.

Belvedere retain their unbeaten run this season, with a fortunate draw at the A.U.L. Complex, on Sunday. In a game which saw the visitors come back from 0 - 2 down to snatch a draw, Belvo played uncharacteristicly poorly throughout, until the final twenty minutes. In fact, Shels would have won this encounter handsomely, had it not been for the outstanding performance of Aiden McCluskey in goal. He made at least three brilliant saves, which had everyone watching the game, applauding his efforts. Of the outfield players, Brendan Moloney, Cillian Sheridan and Karl Byrne put in good performances, worth mentioning. Byrne was involved in both goals. A turn and shot along the ground by Byrne was parried by the Shels' keeper into the path of the on-rushing David Connolly, who calmly slotted the ball into the net for Belvo's first goal, with 15 minutes left on the clock. Five minutes later, it was Byrne again, who seemed to take on the whole Shels' defence, weaving his way around numerous tackles, before passing the ball to Sheridan who slotted the ball home at the near post for the equaliser.

The early start and long journey to Galway proved to be well worthwhile, as Belvedere won 1 - 0 over a spirited Colemanstown United, on Saturday. Right from the start, the hosts defended deeply, as they made it very difficult for Belvo to break them down. Despite creating a number of good chances, Belvo were denied the finishing touch on a number of occasions by solid defending, and so at the half time break, it remained scoreless. In the second half, Belvo continued to take the game to their opponents, but they were again met by a resolute home rear guard. Belvo kept their shape, however, and continued to play good passing football, as they went in search of a goal. Belvo's persistence was rewarded, however, when with 10 minutes remaining, Paul Corry played a great diagonal pass to the in-rushing Stephen Doyle, who side stepped two defenders, before shooting into the left corner of the net, to score a great goal. At the final whistle, there were scenes of great celebration as Belvo advanced to the last 16 of the Troy Cup, but full credit must be given to Colemanstown United for the great fight they put up on the day.

A place in the last 32 of the SFAI Under 12 Norton Cup awaits Belvedere following a polished display of football at Fairview Park on Saturday. Belvo went a goal up after 20 minutes following great play across the back between Neil Byrne, Anto Corcoran, Danny Joyce and Adam O'Brien, who then put Graham Parkinson through on goal with a great pass and Parkinson made no mistake with his neat lob over the advancing Home Farm 'keeper, to score a lovely goal. Belvo continued to play some good passing football and despite creating further scoring chances, were unable to increase their lead by half time. Mid-way through the second half, Corcoran found O'Brien on the edge of the box, with a short corner kick. O'Brien controlled the ball with a great one touch before hammering his shot into the back of the visitors' net to double Belvo's lead. With 10 minutes left to play, O'Brien scored his second and Belvo's third goal when he combined well with Parkinson before blasting the ball to the roof of the net.

This match provided Belvedere Under 11's with an early opportunity to avenge their only defeat of the season, 2 - 1 last weekend, by Saint Kevins's Boys, at Fairview Park. Belvo produced a great display of football and lead 1 - 0 at half time thanks to Liam O'Dwyer's well taken goal on 20 minutes, when he blocked a defender's clearance, before shooting to the back of the net. Five minutes into the second half, Graham Burke doubled Belvo's lead when he brilliantly volleyed home John 'Sullivan's delightful cross from the right wing, following a good passing movement. Belvo kept up the pressure and their efforts were rewarded 10 minutes later when Darragh Raynor capitalised on an error by the home 'keeper, to make it 3 - 0. At this stage of the match, Belvo looked to have secured the 3 points, but Saint Kevin's managed to pull a goal back shortly afterwards. With only minutes remaining in the match, the hosts were awarded a penalty kick, which they converted, and deep into added time they scored again, this time from a free kick, to level the match. Although disappointed not to have taken all thee points, Belvo manager Frank McGrath felt his team had played really well on the day, but were unlucky at the end not to win.

Although the better side on the day, poor defending for two set pieces, saw Belvedere trailing by two goals to nil at the half time break. Steven Nolan had put the ball in the back of the net for Belvo midway through the first half, but the goal was disallowed by the referee. In the second half, Belvo had the better of the play and they equalised with goals from Daniel Ennis ( a header from a corner ) and Steven Nolan who scored from outside the box. Belvo pressed hard for the winner but were unable to capitalise on some good scoring chances. Joey's, however, came more into the game in the last 10 minutes and Belvo 'keeper Colin Cassidy, once again showed his class, as he produced two fine saves to deny the visitors. Four Belvo players have been selected for the Republic of Ireland Under 17 trials on January 25th ; Good luck to James O'Sullivan, Timmy Purcell, John Connellan and Daniel Ennis.

One - nil down at the break after a sloppy first half from the visitors. As it turned out, it was the only decent strike on goal by Lourdes in the entire match. In the 15th.minute of the game, Ian Dunne damaged his knee and was replaced by James Cumberton.  With Belvedere missing the services of three key players due to injury, it was left up to the rest of the panel to try and get something out of this game. Cumberton equalised within three minutes of the restart.  Mitchell Casey's brilliant header came back off the post and was duly slotted home. The remainder of the game saw Belvedere overwhelm their hosts with great team play and hard work. Unfortunately, their efforts were not rewarded with all three points. It seemed Belvedere were going to score as the game wore on, but great defending by Lourdes, which saw two goal-line clearances, thwarted the visitors.

After the month long Christmas fixture break, Belvedere bounced back into action with a good 2 - 1 away win over Confey F.C. on Saturday. Tommy Madden opened the scoring after 10 minutes when he finished off a great move with a shot into the corner of the net. Belvo kept up the pressure, and 10 minutes later were rewarded with a second goal, scored by Graham Parkinson. Confey defended deeply as they managed to keep the score at 2 - 0 at half time. After the break, Belvo continued to take the game to their opponents, despite playing against a stiff breeze. On 15 minutes, Graham Parkinson was unlucky not to score a second goal, when, with the keeper well beaten, he saw his shot on goal denied by the woodwork. Patrick Hutch replaced Graham Parkinson while Luke Dillon came on for Adam O'Brien, as Belvo maintained the pressure. However, with 10 minutes remaining, there was some controversy when a shot on goal by the Confey striker, clearly re-bounded off the upright, but the referee, somehow, awarded a goal. Despite this decision, however, Belvo kept their composure, and they continued to play good passing football, and finished deserving 2 - 1 winners. Good performances on the day also from Danny Joyce and Lee Swords, who will both be involved in the DDSL trials on Sunday.

In their first outing of 2005, Belvedere produced a great team performance to win 2 - 0 away over Saint Joseph's Boys. Belvo lead at half time, thanks to two well taken goals within the first 20 minutes. The first goal was scored on 10 minutes, following a good passing movement, which found Donal Lenihan free on the right, and he delivered a pin-point cross for Lloyd Cooney to head home with ease. Ten minutes later, Belvo went two ahead when Mark Maher hit a "screamer" of a shot from 20 yards out, that gave the 'keeper no chance. In the second half Belvo continued to take the play to their opponents, and should have increased their lead, as they created a number of good scoring chances. Stephen Doyle on the right wing caused problems for the Joey's defence with his pace and skill and he was unlucky not to get his name on the score sheet. At the final whistle it was Belvo who took the 3 points, and manager Wesley Robb was well pleased with his team's commitment on the day.

Two first half goals were enough to secure Belvedere's place in the draw for the last 32 of the SFAI National Under 16 Barry Cup, at a dull Tymon Park on Sunday. Major division team Templeogue, with the hill in their favour, threw everything they had at Belvo in the opening 20 minutes and Belvo keeper Colin Cassidy was called on to make two excellent saves to deny the hosts taking the lead. Eventually however, Belvo started to gain control of the match and they played some good passing football, which had United defending deeply. Belvo's first goal was scored on 25 minutes when John Connellan latched onto a great through pass from Gary Hilliard and he gave the keeper no chance with his shot on goal. Five minutes before the half time break, Sean Young scored Belvo's second goal, following a lovely movement down the right side of the pitch involving Timmy Purcell, Adam McGarry and Connellan. The ball was played to James O'Sullivan, who tricked the Templeogue defence with a clever dummy to Young, who made no mistake with his great finish. Belvo continued to control the play in the second half and they should have increased their lead further as they pounded the United goal. And so at the final whistle it was Belvo who advanced to the next round with a comfortable 2 - 0 win.

Despite Belvedere's dominance of the match, it took half an hour before the first goal was scored by Dave Martin who finished off a lovely movement down the right. Michael Mooney was next on target to score the first of three goals, with a well taken effort that gave the keeper no chance. Thirty seconds into the second half, Belvo went 3 - 0 ahead when Mooney fired home after some good work by Mark Keane, and minutes later he completed his hat-trick, this time from the penalty spot after Keane was fouled in the box. Saint Francis managed to pull a goal back shortly afterwards, when slack Belvo defending allowed the striker in to score. Belvo responded immediately, however, when Shane Fitzgerald hit a pile-driver of a shot from outside the box, giving the keeper no chance. Gerry McGovern replaced Keane, Derek Swan came on for Fitzie, while David Lawlor substituted for Shane Roche in goal. With Belvo now in full flight, Rory Brown fired home goal number six, following a neat passing combination. Left back, Conor Powell completed the scoring for Belvo with 15 minutes left, when he went on a mazy run, neatly slipping past three defenders before coolly slotting the ball beyond the keeper. To be fair to Saint Francis, they never stopped trying and despite loosing a man for a red card offence, they managed to score the final goal of the game, with minutes remaining on the clock.

This was a game of firsts! First defence of the All Ireland crown. First start for Karl Byrne after a six month lay off from injury. First goal for Karl. First start and first goal also for Brian Bonny. First goal for James Cumberton in two seasons. Apart from all the first's, this was also a good display from this team who are in a good vein of form. One up after 5 mins through a headed goal from Garry O'Toole, following a fine cross from Paul Cahillane. O'Toole struck again on 8 mins with almost a carbon copy of the first goal, from another cross from Cahillane, this time with a deep delivery to the back post. Bonny scored the third just before half time with a sweetly struck shot from 25 yards. Efforts from Cillian Sheridan and Bryan Lonergan were thwarted either by the post or by visiting keeper Jamie Moore, who made at least four really good saves throughout the game. Second half domination resulted in two more goals with Cumberton and Byrne sealing victory for Belvedere.

Lady luck deserted Belvedere Under 16's Major team as they were eliminated from the SFAI Barry Cup on a 3 - 1 scoreline by Shelbourne at Fairview Park on Sunday. Belvo had more than matched their Premier division opponents in the first half and were unfortunate to go a goal behind midway through the first half, following a very dubious penalty decision. Early into the second half, Terry McAuley equalised for Belvo with well taken goal following a good move down the left flank. Belvo continued to press the Shels' defence in search of a second goal, but it was the visitors who scored next, with a header from a corner kick. With nothing to loose, Belvo pushed forward in search of an equaliser and they came close to scoring on a few occasions. Belvo however, in committing players forward, left themselves exposed at the back. With minutes remaining in the match, Shels sealed their victory with a well taken third goal following a counter attack as Belvo struggled to get back in defence. Belvo Managers Gerry Galligan and Mick Byrne, although disappointed with the result, were pleased with their team's commitment on the day and felt that with a bit of luck on their side, the result might have been different.

At the excellent Gannon Park complex in Malahide on Sunday, Belvedere Under 17's advanced to the fourth round of the FAI Youth Challenge Cup with a hard fought 2 - 1 extra time victory over Malahide United Under 18's. The first twenty minutes were all Belvedere as they dominated the play from the kick off. Belvo went a goal ahead on 6 minutes when Michael Mooney headed home Conor Lenihan's pin point cross, following a great move down the left flank involving Conor Powell and Mark Keane. Indeed, Belvo should have been out of sight in the first 15 minutes but both Keane and Mooney saw their efforts on goal go narrowly wide, with the keeper well beaten. Instead of being further ahead, Belvo found themselves on level terms after 22 minutes when the referee failed to blow for a blatant off-side move, which allowed Malahide in to score. The goal seemed to inspire the hosts as they got back into the game and pushed forward in search of a second goal. However, the Belvo back four of were up to the task and they dealt comfortably with the United attack. In the second half, Belvo continued to take the game to Malahide and they might have gone in front, with shots from Lenihan, Mooney and Keane only denied by the keeper's fingertips. In mid-field, captain Mark Healy and Scott Weir were both commanding as Belvo pressed hard in search of a winner, but Malahide held on to force the match into extra time. Shortly after the restart Keane brilliantly headed home Lenihan's cross to secure a deserved win for Belvo.

A great team performance was how manager Derek O'Brien described Belvedere's win over Leicester Celtic in this Tony Ryan Cup match at Fairview Park on Saturday. Adam O'Brien opened the scoring early in the first half with a well taken goal from 25 yards out, following a passing movement down the right. This was followed on 15 minutes by a superbly taken goal from Neil Byrne, who, with his back to the goal, swivelled and flicked the ball over the Leicester keeper into the net. Belvo continued to enjoy most of the possession, as they pressed the visitors' rear-guard in search of a third goal. Belvo went 3 - 0 ahead, 10 minutes from half time, when Lee Swords latched onto a lovely through pass, before side-stepping three defenders and slotting the ball into the visitors' net. In the second half Belvo continued to control the game, and might have gone further ahead, but Swords' shot whizzed over the cross bar by inches, following a pin point cross from Tommy Madden. The visitors had a few chances on Belvo's goal, but they were denied by a resolute Belvo defence, with Michael Tobin commanding at centre back.

This cup fixture on Saturday was switched to Fairview Park at late notice when Palmerstown's pitch was declared unplayable. Belvedere lead 2 - 0 at the half time break, thanks to goals from Paul Corry (15 mins ) and Donal Lenihan (25 mins ). The first goal came from a corner kick taken by Corry, which was nicely knocked back to him on the edge of the box by Lee Dixon and Corry made not mistake with his powerful shot on goal. Belvo went two ahead, following a lovely passing movement down the left which found Lenihan unmarked outside the box and he cleverly lobbed the ball over the advancing keeper, for a lovely goal. In the second half Belvo continued where they left off in the first as they attacked the visitors' goal time after time. The pressure paid off, when after 10 minutes, Lloyd Cooney finished in style with an opportunist's goal as the Palmerstown defence was caught ball watching. Indeed, Cooney might have increased his tally further with a few more efforts on goal but his finishing was off target. Manager Wesley Robb had introduced a few positional changes for this cup match and so he was particularly pleased with his team's performance on the day.

A place in the fifth round of the SFAI Barry Cup awaits Belvedere following their solid performance at a cold Fairview Park. Terry McAuley opened the scoring for Belvo on 10 minutes when he cut in from the left before dispatching his shot to the back of the Dunboyne net. Belvo continued to press the play, as Alan Homan controlled the midfield area. The pressure paid off when, on 35 minutes, Gary Harte fired home following a good build up down the right flank. After the half time break, the Meath men came more into the match and they created a few chances of their own. However, Belvo's defence remained tight to deny the visitors, with good performances from Ray Fagan at centre back and Shane Keogh between the posts. Belvo's win now pits them against Premier side opposition in the next round.

A goal behind after only five minutes, following some slack defending, Belvedere drew level midway through the first half thanks to Timmy Purcell's well taken goal. A long clearance by Belvo keeper Colin Cassidy was cleverly flicked on by the head of Steven Nolan to Purcell and he made no mistake with his shot on goal. Shortly afterwards, Purcell was unlucky not to score again, following a nice move, but this time his shot was wide of the target. In the second half Belvo dictated the play for long periods, with John Connellan's deep crosses causing problems for the Joey's defence. Belvo created a number of good scoring chances, with Nolan and Purcell both going close. The winning goal came courtesy of Connellen's excellent delivery, which completely caught the host's defence wrong footed, and Steven Nolan had the easiest of tap ins. The last ten minutes were hectic as Joeys went in search of an equaliser. Belvo defended well, but they have their keeper Cassidy to thank, as he acrobatically saved a certain goal from a shot by the Joey's striker with only minutes remaining.

On a cold morning in Fairview Park, Belvedere's under 17s recorded a comfortable victory over St. Patrick's Athletic by 3 goals to 1. The home side began brightly, enjoying plenty of possession, creating problems for the St. Pat's defence and forcing a number of early corners. Mark Keane and Michael Mooney linked well up front for Belvo but it was down the right that most of their best work was done. Full back Niall O'Reilly got forward well, while winger Shane Fitzgerald's pace and trickery was a constant threat to the visitor's rearguard. The opening goal, however, was not the result of Belvo's quick passing and movement. A ball over the top, intended for Mark Keane, was over-hit and seemed to be heading safely into the Pat's keeper's hands. However, the ball was spilled by the keeper and Keane scored off the rebound. Belvo's second goal, however, was in stark contrast to their first. As Belvo broke out of defence Keane picked up the ball in midfield and played a beautiful reverse pass into the path of strike partner Mooney. At the edge of the box Mooney back-heeled the ball for the on-rushing left back Conor Powell to finish well with his right foot. A minute later it was 3 as Mark Keane drilled home from the edge of the box. In a lack lustre 2nd half performance Belvo still managed to create enough chances to further extend their lead, the pick of which saw Powell narrowly miss with an acrobatic effort. With minutes to go St. Pat's grabbed a consolation goal from the penalty spot to reduce the arrears but it was too little too late as Belvo took all 3 points.

Another impressive performance from Belvedere Under 11's as they maintained their 100% record with a 4 - 0 win over Drogheda Boys at Rathmullen. Belvo led 2 - 0 at the half time break thanks to two headed goals from set-pieces. The first was scored by from C.J. Heapes on 15 minutes from Gavin Ivory's corner kick, while Paul Mannion netted the second on 28 minutes, when he met with Darragh Raynor's delightful in-swinging free kick. Belvo continued to play some lovely passing football in the second half and they went 3 - 0 ahead when Ivory ran at the Drogheda defence, side stepping two defenders, before neatly stroking the ball into net, for an excellent goal. Indeed, Ivory doubled his tally ten minutes later when he latched onto a clever pass from Graham Burke before shooting home to seal the result.

Due to injuries and sickness, Belvedere struggled to field a full team and Gavin Flanagan ( normally sub goalkeeper ) played up-front and caused problems for the visitors defence with his attacking play. Wide left player Michael Tobin opened the scoring for Belvo after 5 minutes, when, following a lovely passing movement down the wing, he fired home from just outside the box. Belvo continued to force the play and they doubled their advantage 10 minutes later, this time from the right wing, as Adam O'Brien finished off a great move, with a well taken goal. In the second half the visitors came more into the game and Belvo were forced to defend deeply at times. Neil Byrne at centre back had an excellent game, ensuring Belvo's defence held firm. With 10 minutes left, United pulled a goal back, but they were unable to secure an equaliser as Belvo held out to the final whistle to take the 3 points.

In the only Belvedere fixture to be played at the weekend, the Under 17's Premier secured their place in the next round of the Leinster Youths Cup as they ran out comfortable winners over Mid-Sutton's Under 18's at Glasnevin, on Sunday. Although they were a year younger, Belvo took the game to their opponents from early on. This positive opening paid dividends when, with barely 5 minutes on the clock, Mark Keane brilliantly jinked his way past two defenders before coolly lifting the ball over the on-rushing goalkeeper with his left foot. This lead, however, was not to last very long, as Mid-Sutton equalised within a few minutes. Belvo gave away possession, far too easily, in the centre circle and with their defence wrong-footed, the visitors' striker raced clear before finishing well past Shane Roche in Belvo's goal. Despite this setback, Belvo soon found their rhythm again and on 14 minutes they regained the lead. Once again, Mark Keane was the scorer with a low shot from distance which the Mid-Sutton keeper maybe should have dealt with. Within a minute the score was 3-1, following a good move down Belvo's right. The ball made it's way to Mick Mooney who engineered some space for himself before unleashing an unstoppable shot into the top corner of the Mid-Sutton net. Belvo continued to move the ball around quickly and created a few more chances before half-time, but couldn't convert them. Despite being forced into a making a change at the break, with James Lee being withdrawn following an earlier clash of heads, and replaced by Gerry McGovern, Belvo continued to dominate the game. Belvo's passing and movement off the ball was causing their opponents all sorts of problems, with wide players Conor Lenihan and Shane Fitzgerald particularly dangerous. It was from a cross from the left by Leno that Belvo scored goal number 4. The ball reached the back post where Fitzie had his shot blocked by the keeper, only for the ball to spill out to substitute McGovern who made no mistake from close range. At this point, Belvo were in total command and should have added to their tally with numerous scoring chances going a-begging. Rory Brown and Fitzie both went close as did Gerry McGovern when his thunderous shot came back off the cross bar. The 5th goal duly arrived courtesy of a stunning left-footed free-kick from the impressive Leno from all of 30 yards. The Boys in Blue could have extended their lead even further but they wasted more good chances including a missed penalty by Mooney, after he was up-ended in the box. As it was, the score remained at 5-1 and Belvo marched on to the next round.

The journey to County Westmeath proved to be a worthwhile one for Belvedere Under 17's as they ran out 4 - 0 winners over Mullingar Athletic Under 18's in the FAI Youth Challenge Cup, at the excellent Gainstown complex. The difference in age wasn't a problem for Belvo, who took the game to their opponents right from the start. Shane Fitzgerald's pacy runs down the right flank caused problems for the Mullingar defence all day. Indeed, Belvo's first goal came as a result of Fitzie being fouled in the box, following a great run. From the resulting penalty kick Michael Mooney made no mistake when he fired home, giving the keeper no chance. The home team, to their credit, played some good passing football, and were tough in the tackle as they tried to contain their visitors. Wide players, Fitzie on the right and Conor Lenihan on the left continued to worry the hosts with their mazy runs, while strikers Mark Keane and Mooney created problems for the Mullingar defence with their ball control every time. Despite creating a number of further scoring chances, the first half ended 1 - 0. Early into the second half, Belvo won a free kick out on the left when Leno was fouled. From the free kick, Fitzie's pin-point in-swinging cross into the box found central defender James Lee's head and he made no mistake with a powerful header to make it 2 - 0. Ten minutes later fellow central defender Sean Fay headed home for Belvo's third goal from a similar in swinging free kick. Gerry McGovern , Dave Martin and Rory Brown replaced Keano, Leno and Mark Healy as Belvo piled on the pressure still. The final nail in Mullingar's coffin was Scott Weir's powerful left footed shot from 20 yards out into the corner of the net, after the hosts had failed to fully clear another Belvo attack. This was a great performance from Belvo, but to be fair to Mullingar, the result doesn't really do justice to their efforts on the day.

Leading 1 - 0 at half time, thanks to Gary Harte's well taken goal on 15 minutes, Belvedere really dominated the second period as they forced Ballybrack to defend deeply. The pressure paid off when Michael Galligan scored Belvo's second goal early in the second half, with a great shot, following some nice approach play. Belvo continued to press the Ballybrack defence, and with 10 minutes remaining, the result was put well and truly beyond doubt, when the visitor's player put the ball in the back of his own net for Belvo's third goal. Managers Gerry Galligan and Mick Byrne were well pleased with their team's performance on the day, as they advanced to the 3rd round of the Barry Cup

Hero of the day for Belvedere was Paul Corry who scored the only goal of the match after 15 minutes, in an exciting SFAI Troy Cup tie, at Fairview Park. This was a great team performance from Belvo against a good Tolka Rovers side who made the hosts fight all the way to the final whistle for their victory. Tolka too had their chances, but Belvo defended well on the day, with solid performances from central back Gavin McArdle and right full Kyle Jacob, in particular. Belvo's mid-field duo of Gary Burke and Stephen Traynor were both impressive in controlling the play, while Lee Dunne on the right flank, and Donal Lenihan, up-front, caused problems for the Tolka defence all day with their pace and skill.

Goals from Tommy Madden ( 25 minutes ) and Michael Tobin ( 55 minutes ) secured an impressive 2 - 0 win for Belvedere over Shelbourne, at the AUL Complex on Saturday. Indeed, Madden could have scored earlier in the game, but his shot on goal was denied by the cross bar. Belvo played some delightful football as they stretched Shels' defence time after time and were unlucky not to be further ahead at half time. Gavin Flanagan replaced the injured Belvo goalkeeper Craig McKeown for the second half and he too maintained a clean sheet. Luke Dillon, on his debut for Belvo, was impressive up-front and he was unlucky not to get his name on the score sheet, as was Anthony Corcoran, who's shot on goal smashed off the woodwork, with the Shels' keeper beaten. This Belvo team, coached by Derek O'Brien, are a delight to watch and continue to improve with every match.

This was a match that Belvedere could have won comfortably had they taken their chances early in the game. Belvo squandered at least seven clear-cut scoring chances in the first half, and so it remained scoreless at the break. However, as happens in football, Belvo then went a goal behind early into the second half when Shels scored from a free kick. This seemed to inspire the hosts and Belvo had their keeper Colin Cassidy to thank for keeping them in the match, when he brilliantly double saved to prevent Shels going further ahead. Having weathered the storm, Belvo bounced back and were unlucky not to equalise when Sean Young's powerful shot crashed off the cross bar, with the Shels' keeper well beaten. With eight minutes remaining in the match, Belvo won a free kick out on the wing. John Connellan's excellent cross into the danger area was met by Steven Nolan's header into the back of the net, to level the match.

Two well taken goals in the first half sent Belvedere into the next round of the National Under 17 FAI Cup at Carolan Park, Tallaght on Sunday. Despite the heavy pitch, Belvo played some neat football at times and were well worth their victory against a lively Hoops side. Striker Derek Swan was forced to retire after only 12 minutes with an injured knee, following a heavy tackle. He was replaced by Gerry McGovern up front. The opening goal was scored after 17 minutes by striker Michael Mooney who finished off a lovely passing movement involving four Belvedere players. Left back Conor Powell started the move when he found Conor Lenihan with a great pass on the wing. Leno passed to Scott Weir and he in turn quickly switched play to the right for Shane Fitzgerald, who raced past the full back before squaring the ball for Mooney to score. Provider turned scorer for the second goal, when Fitzie blasted home from close range following a similar passing movement down the left flank. After the break, Belvo continued to dictate the play but were unable to increase their lead despite creating a number of scoring opportunities. Rovers too had their chances but they were denied by a resolute Belvo defence.

After the disappointment of having no match last weekend because of the bad weather, Belvedere showed a hunger for action as they recorded with an impressive 6 - 1 away win over Cambridge Boys, at Ringsend Park on Saturday. Belvo lead 2 -1 at half-time thanks to goals from Gavin Ivory and Paul Mannion, both scoring for the first time this season. The second half was very much one way traffic as Belvo netted four more goals without reply. Mannion scored his second and Belvo's third goal shortly after the re-start and this was followed by goals from C.J. Heapes, Adam Merry and a second one from Ivory late in the match, to seal an impressive win. Belvo goalkeeper Dean Smith and his replacement in the second half John Blake, both turned in solid performances on the day. Manager Frank McGrath and his assistants can be rightly proud of their team's performance as they maintain their 100% record this season.

At Fairview Park on Sunday, Belvedere extended their unbeaten run this season with a solid 3 - 0 win over Tolka Rovers. From the kick off, Belvo took the game to the visitors, who were forced to defend deeply. The pressure paid off, when on 8 minutes, Paul Cahillane's excellent cross into the penalty area completely deceived the visitors' keeper and it floated into the back of the net for the opening goal. Belvo continued to pressurise the Tolka defence, and ten minutes later David Connolly doubled Belvedere's advantage when he headed home Keith Cox's pin-point cross. It was very much one way traffic as from here on, and Gary Breen gave the Tolka keeper no chance when he scored Belvo's third goal with a great header from close range on 25 minutes, following Paul Cahillane's delightful cross into the danger area. For the second half, Belvo made a number of substitutions, as Tolka defended strongly to prevent any further goals. This lead to a rather dull second period and despite some further attempts on goal by Belvo, the score remained at 3 - 0 as the final whistle sounded.

Hero of the day for Belvedere was Steven Nolan who scored four goals in the second half to round off an excellent personal performance. Belvo lead 2 - 0 at the half time break, thanks to two headed goals scored from corner kicks. John Connellan delivered the crosses for both goals which were scored by Sean Young and Daniel Ennis. After the break, Belvo totally dominated the play as Nolan proved unstoppable in front of goal. Connellan also scored a great goal when he finished a lovely passing movement in style. Brendan Dawson also got his name on the score sheet when fired home from close range to secure a comprehensive win for Belvedere.

Playing on the excellent refurbished Saint Mobhi Road pitch, the stage was set for a good game of football between these two great club rivals. After a tight first 15 minutes, Adam Merry broke the dead-lock for Belvedere with two well taken goals, in quick succession, as he was twice put through on goal by John Sullivan's excellent passes. This was followed by a great third goal scored by Graham Burke, to make the score 3 - 0 at the half time break. The second half was totally dominated by Belvedere who tore the Home Farm defence apart, scoring six more goals without reply. Burke scored two more goals to complete his hat-trick while Dan Byrne, John O'Sullivan and Darragh Raynor each scored, while Home Farm also conceded an own goal to make 9 - 0 to Belvedere.

 Having lost their two previous league matches, Belvedere really announced their arrival with an impressive 5 - 0 win over Shamrock Rovers at Fairview Park. Belvo went a goal up after 10 minutes thanks to Michael Doyle's delightful strike after he had waltzed past the visitors' defenders before dispatching the ball into the net. The second goal came shortly after, as Belvo defended a Hoops' corner kick. Doyle broke quickly from defence before combining with Daniel Langan and Mark Scannell who then found Paul O'Leary in space and he made no mistake with his effort on goal. Five minutes before the break, a cleverly taken throw-in by Gavin O'Brien found striker Bernard Ogene in space and he gave the keeper no chance with a great shot to make it 3 - 0. In the second half, Belvo continued to press the play as Rovers were forced to defend. Ten minutes after the restart, Scannell scored Belvo's 4th goal following Keith Ward's corner kick which was only half cleared by the Rovers' defence, and he fired home from close range. With minutes remaining on the watch, O'Leary scored his second and Belvo's fifth goal with a well taken effort to put the result beyond doubt. Belvo manager Archie O'Connor was full of praise for his team on a great performance.

Michael Mooney's tap-in goal on 60 minutes, following some good work by Scott Weir, proved to be the winner for Belvedere at Fairview Park. It had seemed however, that Belvo would never score as they squandered numerous chances in a match they had dominated for large periods. Derek Swan scored Belvo's opening goal on 20 minutes with a great finish following a lovely passing movement down the right. Belvo then increased the pressure on the Joeys' defence in search of a second goal, but despite creating some good scoring chances they failed to increase their lead before the half time break. Ten minutes after the restart, Joeys equalised, against the run of play, following a mix-up in the Belvo defence as two players clashed, going for the same ball, leaving the visitors' striker with as easy chance to score. Belvo continued to press the play in search of a winner, as Joeys defended deeply, but the finishing touch was missing in front of goal. Eventually however, the pressure paid off when Mooney scored, and Belvo advanced to the second round of the Tab Cup on a 2 - 1 score-line at the final whistle.

Sunday 25th September

Damien Byrne's team are enjoying their best ever start to a season as they remain unbeaten in five games. On Sunday in the windswept A.U.L. Complex they came from behind to force extra time and secure their place in the next round of the Conway Cup. After dominating for long periods in the first half, Belvedere went in one nil down. Belvedere could and should have scored two goals in that half when Mitchell Casey and David Connolly headed over from close in, when it looked like it was easier to score. Excellent wing-play involving Cillian Sheridan and Paul Cahillane with the latter supplying the crosses. However, Casey and Connolly were to make amends as the game wore on. The second half was fairly even with Belvo just edging ahead on play as the game neared it's end. Aiden McCluskey pulled off a brilliant save from former Belvo boy, Stephen Caffrey. Casey was pushed forward for the last few minutes in the hope that he might get an equaliser. He didn't, but caused enough trouble in the Shels' defence for Connolly to score his sixth goal of the season. Extra time was needed to settle this game. Not too many scoring chances in extra time until Connolly was fouled close to the corner flag on Belvo's left hand side. From the resulting free kick, Cahillane sent in a superb, inch perfect cross onto the head of the in-rushing Casey, who buried his header in the top left of the goal to win the game and also celebrate his first goal for his new club.

Sunday 19th September

This was tight game with both sides battling for control of the match, but it was Belvo who went ahead thanks to James O'Sullivan's well taken goal midway through the first half. Indeed, Belvo should have doubled their advantage just before the break when Steven Nolan scored a great goal but it was disallowed by the referee. In the second half, Rovers came more into the game and they pressurised the Belvo defence. With 10 minutes remaining Belvo conceded a goal when they lost possession in mid-field. Rovers then went in search of a winner in what was a hectic final few minutes for Belvo, but they defended strongly to ensure a share of the points.

An injury hit Belvedere made hard work of winning this exciting tie at Fairview Park. Belvo went a goal behind on the half hour mark when they conceded a soft goal from a corner kick, as keeper Shane Roche failed to hold onto the cross and the ball spilled for Shel's to score. It wasn't long, however, before Belvo were back on level terms when Mark Keane chased down a long clearance on the right, before delivering a great cross into the penalty area for Robbie Manley to head home. Belvo continued to force the play and twice had shots on goal rebound off the woodwork, with the Shels keeper beaten. At times, the match became quite physical and the referee issued a number of yellow cards to both teams. Derek Swan replaced Rory Brown for the second half as Belvo continued to press the play and they won a free kick out on the right. Conor Lenihan delivered a delightful in-swinging cross into the penalty area and it was expertly headed home by central defender Sean Fay, to put Belvo 2 - 1 ahead. Shortly afterwards, Belvo were reduced to 10 men when team captain Mark Healy was dismissed for a second yellow card. Shels then piled on the pressure with their extra man advantage and Belvo keeper Roche was called on to make some excellent saves. Belvo also created some good scoring chances, but the final touch was missing. Despite over 5 minutes of added time being played, Belvo held firm until the final whistle to secure the 3 points.

Saturday 18th September

Three goals each from Darragh Raynor and Graham Burke and one each from Dan Byrne and Paul Mannin secured an impressive win for Belvo over Lourdes Celtic, at Fairview Park. Another fine performance with Paul Mannin, playing between mid-field and attack, causing havoc for the Lourdes defence. Best of the eight goals was one scored directly from a corner kick by Darragh Raynor ( son of Bohs legend, Johnny ). This Belvo team play continue to improve with every match and are a delight to watch as they play some lovely passing football.

Blustery weather conditions at the AUL Complex on Saturday made good football difficult for both teams. In a tight game, Belvo showed some great spirit and determination as they more than matched the physically strong Home Farm side. Donal Lenihan was in great form and he caused the Home Farm defence no end of trouble with his attacking play. Hero of the day for Belvo was Graham Dixon who scored the only goal of the match with a great shot on goal, 5 minutes from half time. Despite heavy pressure from Home Farm in the second half, Belvo dug in and defended really well and at the final whistle ran out worthy 1 - 0 winners.

Central defender Daniel Joyce scored a great goal 10 minutes from full time, to earn Belvo a well deserved point at Fairview Park. Belvo went a goal behind early in the first half when Lourdes Celtic scored from a free kick from outside the penalty area. Belvo battled hard to get on equal terms, without success, and at the break the score remained 1 - 0. In the second half, striker Eric Wade went close with a few good efforts on goal, as Belvo began to get on top. But, Lourdes managed to hold on to their one goal lead until Daniel broke out of his defence with a great run, beating 3 defenders, before dispatching a great shot into the net for the equaliser, giving the visitor's keeper no chance.

Belvedere Under 16's Premier team produced a top drawer performance as they ran out 4 - 1 winners over Saint Kevin's Boys at Fairview Park. Adam McGarry was the provider for the first goal after 6 minutes when he found James O'Sullivan with a great pass, and he gave the keeper no chance with his shot on goal. The visitors equalised within ten minutes, but it wasn't long before O'Sullivan restored Belvo's lead with a great goal from a free kick from outside the penalty area. With minutes remaining in the first half, Steven Nolan scored Belvo's third goal when he swivelled and turned before firing the ball into the roof of the net. Unfortunately, Steven was injured in scoring the goal and was he replaced by new signing Shane Ryan, who was making his debut for Belvo, as well as playing his in first match since last October, following a serious injury. In the second half, Belvo continued to dominate the play with some lovely passing football and they had Saint Kevin's on the back foot for long periods. And so, it was no surprise when Belvo scored their fourth goal with 10 minutes remaining on the watch. A great passing movement involving Brendan Dawson, Alan Power, Shane Ryan and Kieran Maloney found Andy Montgomery in space on the edge of the box and he coolly slotted the ball home to seal a great win for Belvo.

In swirling winds and rain at Carolan Park, Tallaght, it was Belvo's Under 17's who ran out convincing winners over Shamrock Rovers by a score line of 5 goals to 1. After going in level at 1-1 at the break, last season's double winners upped the tempo in the 2nd half to wrap up all three points in comfortable fashion thanks to goals from Michael Mooney, Scott Weir, Mark Keane and an own goal by a Hoops defender. The first half was a scrappy affair as both sets of players struggled to deal with the swashbuckling conditions. However, it was Belvo who opened the scoring after 18 minutes with the best move of the half. Mark Keane's superb cross-field pass found Conor Lenihan out on the left. His cross was almost met perfectly by Scott Weir but the ball broke for Michael Mooney to tap in. Belvo looked fairly comfortable leading up to half time until a mix up between keeper Shane Roche and centre back Sean Fay gifted Rovers an equaliser. The second half was a different story altogether, as Belvo settled and outclassed their opponents. A move down the right ended with Weir finishing low past the keeper. Belvo's third goal all but killed off Rovers. Keane was again the provider, this time with a defence-splitting through ball to strike partner Mooney, who coolly slotted home. With Rovers visibly tiring as they chased the game Belvo were now in cruise control. The fourth goal duly arrived when Niall O'Reilly's deep right-wing cross was beautifully met by the head of Keane, despite the ball appearing to be beyond him. Both sides then made changes and it was one of Belvo's subs, Dave Martin, whose in-swinging corner was inadvertently put past his own keeper by an unfortunate Rovers defender to round off the scoring.

The first half was fairly even with both defences on top and so it remained scoreless at the half time break. Hero of the day for Belvo was Lee Dixon who scored 2 great goals from free kicks early into the second half. Mark Maher replaced Donal Lenihan while James Perry came on for Gary Burke, as Belvo continued to play some lovely passing football. Belvo went 3 - 0 ahead when mid-fielder Gareth Callaghan finished off a good move with a well taken goal. With five minutes remaining in the match, Saint Kevins scored a consolation goal, but Belvo proved to be worthy 3 - 1 winners on the day. Manager Wesley Robb and his assistants were more than happy with their team's performance on the day.

Another good performance from Belvedere Under 11's Premier as they recorded a 2 - 1 win over Drogheda Boys at Fairview Park. This was a tight game, and Drogheda certainly made their hosts work hard for their win. Belvo lead 1 - 0 at the break, thanks to Adam Merrie who latched on to a lovely pass from Graham Burke to score after 15 minutes. Midway through the second half Burke scored himself with a great shot on goal to make it 2 - 0. Belvo played some nice passing football, with Dean Mason impressive in the middle of the park while C.J. Heapes had a great game at centre back. Drogheda managed to pull a goal back with 10 minutes remaining, but Belvo held out until the final whistle to claim a well deserved three points.

In their first league match of the season Belvedere Under 10A's were unlucky not to have taken all 3 points in an exciting match at Fairview Park. Belvo had the better of the play and were leading right up to the end thanks to striker Dane Moynihan who scored two great goals. However, Belvo conceded two soft goals which let Home Farm back into the match. A number of Belvedere players turned in good performances on the day. Darragh Lenihan had a great game, controlling the centre of the park while Sean Corbally was outstanding at centre back. The Gannon twins Paul ( left back ) and Alan ( striker ) both played really well, while Graham Fagan caused all sorts of problems for the Home Farm defence with his pace and skill on the right wing. Sean Berigan at right back and Declan Donnelly on the left were impressive as was goalkeeper Danny Morrison. Although Belvo could have won the match, Belvo manager Colm Egan and his assistant Brian Gannon will be happy with a point in their first 9 a-side league outing.

Two goals from Michael Galligan and one from Craig Dunne secured a great 3 - 0 away win for Belvedere Under 16's Major team at Clondalkin on Sunday. The first goal was scored after 10 minutes following a lovely build up down the right. The ball was played through to Galligan and he made no mistake with his shot on goal. Saint Francis then launched a number of attacks of their own but they were met with a resolute Belvo defence, who were giving nothing away and so the score remained 1 - 0 at the break. Play was fairly even for the early part of the second half, until a Belvedere shot on goal re-bounded to Dunne and he blasted the ball home from the edge of the box, and to make it 2 - 0. With Belvo now in full flight, they added a third goal on 50 minutes, when Terry McAuley's cross from the left was met by Galligan who gave the Saint Francis keeper no chance with his shot into the back of the net, to put the result beyond doubt.

Four goals from Mark Keane and one each from Scott Weir, Shane Fitzgerald and Mark Healy, without reply, ensured a comprehensive win against newly promoted Raheny United at Fairview Park. To be fair to the visitors they never stopped trying and the score line doesn't do justice to their efforts on the day. Fitzie caused problems for the Raheny defence all through the match with his pace and skill down the right flank, while up front, Keane was unstoppable in front of goal. The Belvo defence remained solid throughout the match, while Healy and Weir controlled the mid-field from the start. Belvo lead 2 - 0 at half time but within minutes of the restart had gone 4 - 0 ahead as Keane scored two more goals to make it four in a row. Gerry McGovern, Dave Martin, Rory Brown all turned in impressive performances when they came off the bench and they were instrumental in extending Belvo's lead to seven goals. Substitute goalkeeper David Lawlor pulled off two great saves in the last 15 minutes to deny Raheny, while keeper turned striker Shane Roche came close to scoring on two occasions.

This was great display of football from a Belvedere team playing their first season in 11 a-side football. Belvo went two goals up after only 5 minutes thanks to Darragh Raynor and John O'Sullivan who both finished in style. Just before the break, Raynor scored his second and Belvo's third goal. In the second half, Belvo continued where they left off when Graham Burke scored after 6 minutes to make it 4 - 0. Raynor scored again while O'Sullivan hit 2 more as both went on to complete their hat-tricks. Belvo were then awarded a penalty kick which Daniel Byrne fired home from the spot. Jay Doyle then scored to finish off a great day's work for Belvedere. Manager Frank McGrath and his assistants were understandably delighted with their team's performance on the day.

Lady luck deserted Belvedere Under 17's Premier team at Fairview Park on Thursday evening as they played out a scoreless draw with Home Farm. The opening period was fairly even with both defences on top. But, as the match went on, Belvo began to control the play and created a number of scoring chances. Shane Fitzgerald caused trouble for the visitor's defence with his pace down the right flank, as he delivered some excellent crosses into the box. Scott Weir went on a great run from midfield, beating two defenders, before he was taken down in the box, for what seemed, a certain penalty kick. But, to everyone's amazement the referee waved play on. Derek Swan replaced Mark Healy for the second half, but he only lasted 12 minutes before he was dismissed for a harsh second yellow card for supposed simulation, when he was taken down in the penalty area. However, Belvedere continued to press the play despite their numerical disadvantage and Scott Weir was unlucky when his header on goal smashed off the woodwork, with the Home Farm keeper well beaten. Belvo continued to take the game to Home Farm, who defended deeply. With only minutes remaining in the match Belvo won a free kick on the right. Conor Lenihan delivered an excellent in-swinging cross into the box. Mark Keane met the cross with a brilliant header on goal, only to see the ball crash against the crossbar to deny Belvo the winning goal.

Trailing 1 - 0 after only 10 minutes, Belvedere soon began to find their touch and they equalised thanks to James O'Sullivan's effort on goal. Substitute Andy Montgomery replaced the injured John Connellan early in the first half. Despite increased pressure from Belvo the first half ended all even. The second half was all Belvo as they replied with four more goals. Timmy Purcell scored the second goal early soon after the restart with a neat finish, before Steven Nolan increased the lead further, minutes later, when he scored from a quickly taken free kick, from just outside the box. O'Sullivan was on target again with 15 minutes left when he scored from a rebound, following a Belvo attack on goal. With full time looming, Jonathon Long went on a mazy run, beating two defenders, before dispatching the ball to the roof of the Ranger's net for a great goal, to seal an impressive win for Belvo.

Two nil down after only 15 minutes following some poor defending, Belvedere managed to pull a goal back on 20 minutes, thanks to David Connolly, who scored with a great finish. Saint Kevins however, scored again soon after, following a counter attack, to restore their 3 -1 advantage. Six minutes into the second half Brian Lonergan scored Belvo's second goal he finished off a lovely movement with a great shot on goal. Belvo piled on the pressure and they were soon level when Connolly scored his second and Belvo's third goal with 20 minutes left to play. From then on it was all Belvedere as they went in search of a winner, creating several scoring chances. But, Saint Kevins managed to hold on until the final whistle for a share of the points. This match was featured in The Star newspaper on Tuesday 31st August.

Belvedere Under 16's Major team stated their season on the right note with a 2 - 1 over Ballyoulster United at Fairview Park on Sunday. Alan Homan scored Belvo's first goal midway through the first half with a great finish following a corner kick. Despite dominating the match for long periods, Belvo failed to increase their lead before the half time break. The visitors came more into the match in the second half but their efforts on goal were denied by Belvo until they managed to equalise with 20 minutes left to play. Belvo however, kept working hard in search of a second goal and it came with only minutes to go when Chris Hatton scored following a lovely passing movement. Manager Gerry Galligan was happy to take the 3 points and start the new season off with a win.
