The Cliffs of Moher

The Cliffs are 8km long and 214m high, it is here that one can most easily get a feel for the wildness of the terrain over which the Celts wandered, for although they built imposing castles, very often they preferred the outdoor nomadic life and enjoyed the hunt.

The imposing Cliffs of Moher on the rugged west coast of Ireland

The tower was built in 1835 by Cornelius O'Brien, a descendant of Brian Boru. The High King of Ireland, and the O'Brien's of Bunratty Castle, Kings of Thomond, as an observation point for the hundreds of tourists who even then visited the Cliffs.

O'Briens Tower - an observation point used by tourists even in the 1800s

O'Brien's Tower is the best location from which to view the Cliffs, from this vantage point one can see the Aran Islands, Galway Bay, as well as The Twelve Pins and the Maum Turk Mountains to the north in Connemara and Loop Head to the South.

Opening Times

O'Brien's Tower: March to October 29th (weather permitting) 9.30am to 18.00pm.

Visitor Centre: all year 9.00am to 19.00pm.

Cliffs of Moher Visitor Centre: open all year round
9.30am to 17.30pm. June to Aug 29th 9.00am to 20.00pm

More from 'Shannon Heritage'

The Cliffs of Moher are just a pleasant 90 minutes to 2 hours drive from the Waterfront House by way of such beautiful scenic countryside surrounding Kinvara, Ballyvaughan and Lisdoonvarna.
This is a day trip along by the Atlantic coastline that we recommend to all of our guests, and one they really enjoy!
